    Lelit Combi - First experience..

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hello CSers.
I bought my new Lelit PL042EM home this afternoon and have had a good play with it and thought Id share my experience (though it may not be a great one)

So after chatting to the nice girl at jetblack espresso in mosman she put together a little package for me including a Tamper - which turned out to be a 58mm tamper which doesnt fit the Lelits 57mm baskets. I didnt bother to read the little sticker on the box until I got home and opened by goodie bag. I tried it anyway and sure enough its too big.

Not to worry! Theres a built in tamper! ;) (even if its too small)

So after doing all the boiler filling routine before use I pull my first shot. Grind setting = 3/7 (as recommended by the manual).
Not a drop came through. So i tried setting 5 and i got a little thin inconsistent stream in one side. Still too fine or too firmly packed? So I tried 4 with an outrageously light tamp - like flattening a sandcastle. This time I got nothing..

Lastly I chose to give 6 a go. It looked more like the stuff you get in a vacuum pack from the supermarket and I got a decent stream within 30 seconds. But the crema dissipated after less then a minute. :(

    Might I mention two things:

    1. Im 90% sure the machine on display at the store had a grind setting of 4, and the lady there tamped quite firmly as you would expect AND she made an amazing little Latte.
    2. There was water dripping out around the portafilter each time I pulled a shot - except thats likely due to the build up of pressure as none of the water is managing to escape through the coffee puck.

I moved on to try steaming. And of course being my first time using this steaming function I didnt get microfoam however it did steam to hot enough in a brisk 30 seconds. :)

I do have one issue however. According to the instruction manual and according to common sense, when you turn on the machine the power light comes on. Which it did. Then when you press the steam button to start getting her reared up for some steaming - the Coffee/Steam light should come on and as soon as shes hot enough - itll turn off and youre ready to go.

This light should also come on when you run hot water through the wand from a cold start.

Since the moment I plugged my machine in I have yet to see that light come on..

I will be giving Jetblack a call shortly (most likely on monday) to firstly sort out the tamper, secondly ask about the grind setting and thirdly ask about this non-existant light.

Any thoughts or comments I would love to hear from you :)

It takes a little practice to use a new machine & working properly

When it happens it will be a "light bulb moment"

So practice, practice, practice and it will come together sooner than later

Practice of course makes perfect and Im excited for the learning curve ahead :) - however the issue with the tamper and the light I think need some looking in to.

By far the best thing to do.... Probably before posting in here to be honest ;)

I know not everyone has a tool thumb, similar to a green thumb but in mechanical things

Can you unscrew the handle from the base of the tamper ?
If possible & dependant on the construction
Connect the base to a drill
Secure drill in a vice or drill stand
Use a fine file at first followed with some emery paper and sand the edge of the base down to a made to basket fit
When the correct fit is archived finish off with fine wet/dry paper for a showroom finish

I have done this for an acquaintance and it was perfect

Dont know about that advice KK.... :-?

Lukes purchases are only hours old and in the case of the Tamper, clearly just a simple mistake was made. By far the best thing to do is to head back to JetBlack and give them the opportunity to put things right - Which I am certain they will do.... 8-)

    Hi Lukewarm711,

Yes Harriet realised soon after you left that the wrong tamper had ended up in your bag - your 57mm tamper has been set aside.

When you pop back to pick up your tamper Im sure we can work out whats going wrong with your technique and put it right.

It sounds like you might have a dud light. We have spares in stock so we can swap it out in about 5 minutes while you wait,

Looks like a good resolution to me- as youd expect from any CS sponsor.

FWIW, I think its much better to give the supplier the opportunity to rectify any oversight or minor problem before posting what may be viewed by some as a complaint. Keeps things cordial for all concerned, no? :-?

your issue could be a "very conservatively installed burr travel retaining screw" as per this thread:http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1274159981/27

So after a quick pop in to Jetblack and speaking to Charlie we have the machine running purrrfectly. :)

The light was fixed on the spot while I waited and I now have a perfectly fitted tamper.

Thanks to all the guys and girls at Jetback for all your help. Ill be back next time I get upgraditis. :)

The older Lelit combi had toggle switches, the new ones look like push button, how do they operate? is it push and hold, or are they a push on and push off?

also some one posted close up photos of an Lelit PL042EM a few days ago, sure looked sexy, but cant find post , even with search, could some one post link here or PM me.

Yeah theyre a click in and click off style button. Solid feeling too. Its not the old ones that had toggle switches. I think youll find theres 3 or 4 versions of them - the EM the QE and maybe another one or two? Each ones is slightly different asthetically but same functionally. eg, EM has a guage and chrome buttons. The QE i think has black switches and no guage. Theres also one with silver stick/jet-like flicky switches.
And like Rudebutt said - I posted the pics I took yesterday :)

How did you go getting used to texturing milk with the steam wand? I have a refurbished Lelit (Quaha) and the place I bought from, didnt know much about actually using it (they service coffee machines). Ive been fumbling in the dark trying to work out how to use it. Figured out most things but just cant sort out the steaming wand to produce microfoam.

I have to say the first couple of times I got bubbly milk. Its gradually getting more and more micro. Best ive made so far was this mornings. Firstly take off the steam aid if there is one.
Turn on your steam button and wait till its ready - then open up the steam knob and let the steam out . As soon as the light for the steam comes back on (meaning the boiler is turned back on) turn off your steam knob and pop the wand in the milk.. then turn it back on again.. What this does is allows you to be steaming the milk while the boiler is on resulting in higher pressure and hopefully a bit of a roll.
The only thing im struggling with is getting the whirlpool.. theres plenty of power but the straight down angle of the wand isnt letting me get the right angle for the whirlpool. As yours is second hand maybe try using some tools of some kind and bend the wand outwards on an angle to see if you can get a better roll???

Also try doing the soapy water practice method - it actual works suprisingly well. :D

OK, what is the soapy water practice method?

Thanks for the tips. I have a feeling I will be drawing on your growing experience as I too come to grips with my new (old) machine and my lack of experience in general :)

I agree that the angle of the wand is a problem. Mine is also quite loose and floppy. Ive been trying to find out if a better wand can be fitted to these machines. My little Breville Ikon has a much better wand and is a dream to use.

You can modify it yourself of course but most people dont have the time, tools, skills or equipment for that. You can swap out the tip for an Elektra tip.

" *1st-line Equipment Part Number - 01400021, replaces the single hole acorn nut with a 3-hole chromed tip from the Elektra Microcasa.
    http://bit.ly/d0CCFf * "

I have spoken to Greg Pullman about the nemox/lelit wands and hes looked into it before but there needs to be more interest and demand for it to be worth manufacturing an aftermarket wand mod.

Have a read of this thread. http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1275289271/new

Thanks for the soapy water vid. Ill have a crack tonight but it explains it clearly.

The wand on my machine is quite short and isnt the ball joint type so getting the right angle is hard. Also it is very floppy. Im a bit embarrassed to ask you this but is yours floppy too? Ive never seen a new Lelit so dont know how they should be.

I saw he ref to the Elektra tip but dont how to get one here. The guys at 1st-line wont ship to Australia.
