Just got me a Bezzera - But what is it??

    Hi Snobs,

This is my first thread so take it easy on me, but I need your help!

Just got my hands on a slightly non-functional bezzera machine that looks great in my kitchen but so far thats all it does!
From the serial number I'm thinking its a 1993 build, hx, tank, with vibe pump (fluid-o-tech).

The element seems to have gone, but the machine turns on, and the pump runs. (I had to disconnect the element to stop it tripping the earth leakage safety switch).

I've previously pulled down and worked on a few machines before, (Gaggia, Brugnetti and Brasillia) and I have a fair idea what I'm up against here, but I've never seen a model quite like this.. any ideas?
It varies from a bz99 in that it has a front mounted 3-way return spout to the tray, and has square switches, bit more like a Livia 90?

    Any help would be great!

    I'm thinking of doing
    -full tear-down, clean and descale,
-replace pressurestat - ANYONE KNOW WHAT WITH?
    -heating element
    -gaskets
-maybe install a double manometer for boiler and group pressure - OPEN TO IDEAS HERE!
    -upgrade steam arm

    Anything else I should consider/abort??

Thanks for sharing your wisdom bretheren!

    interesting stuff.

i think that's just one of the small mater pressure stats. if you have somewhere sensible to mount the probe and the controller, you could always go the PID route, but i would guess that a new pressure stat for ~$80 or whatever those mater units are would be simpler (direct swap, no fiddly fittings or re-wiring).

Looks like it has rancilio style switches/lights

Have to say livia 90, they messed up and put the bezzera compliance plate on it?

This is an earlier version of the Bezzera BZ99 (Diagram can be downloaded from our website Bezzera Coffee Machine Australia - Exclusive Connection to 100 Years of Refining the taste of Italian Espresso). The majority of the parts will be the same.

    Regards

Thanks for the responses and the excellent info Chris,
I'm starting the tear down and clean process.
The kind people at di Bartoli gave me a few tips and the descale detergent, so now to work!

I'm at a loss......why tear down and clean / descale anything when it probably only needs a replacement element to operate just fine. If it needs a pressurestat replace it with a standard unit, otherwise.....KISS.

I hear where you're coming from, Fresh!
But I got the machine as a bit of a project to tinker with, and I'm really enjoying it.

After 20yrs, its picked up quite a bit of scale and gunk, and its going to be nice to have a machine thats all cleaned up and working spot on.
With a few personalisations along the way!

Maybe its just a symptom of being an engineer's son!
