Gaggia Classic - Correct Size Tamper

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi All

Im new at "manual" coffee making having used a Delonghi Magnifica until now.

I have purchased a used Gaggia Classic and am wondering which is the correct size tamper for this machine. I know that the question seems a little naive as one can measure the diameter of the cup filter however there seems to be fairly slight size increments in tamper diameters. I think that the size is 55mm however it could be 57mm, Im just not sure and thought that I would check prior to purchasing a tamper.

    Thanks
    Peter

Try 58mm. ;) Take the basket with you when you go to purchase the tamper.

    Cheers

If you are prepared to spend the money, get a Pullman. I got mine for my birthday a couple of years ago and it is perfect for my classic.

It does depend on your definition of perfect. In my view a perfect fit is one that tamps all the coffee and doesnt leave a ridge of untamped coffee around the edge of the basket, and most Gaggias will do that with a 58.0mm tamper although there are some slightly smaller Gaggia baskets out there. So OzPeter, it depends what you want. A $35 aluminium 58mm unit will roughly fit, but if youre after a perfect or proper fit youll need to do what Lucinda did and spend a bit more to get one made to fit.

Ok so "perfect" is apparently open to subjective debate. I should say it fits extremely well and on most occasions (accept when I do a less than perfect vertical tamp) no grounds a left around the rim.

True the tamper is not a $30 aluminum, light weight piece of "make do". It is a beautiful stubby jarrah handled turned stainless steel number. Cost around $50 from an e bay store. Well made and cheaper than the "best", but still a 58mm that works a treat and helps me make coffee infinitely better than the plastic rubbish that came with the Classic.

Maybe not "snob" :( enough for the site, but works well for me and so my advise is that you can can get great functioning tamper for the classic with out paying for the Pullman or better. :)

Yeah, I have 2 as well.
The answer to the question is subjective though.
As it stands, I would always lean towards a Pullman Tamper and I reckon you would too.
However, others like Reg Barber, some prefer Espro, some people make their own and so on.

    So, what is better? Depends.
