BEST SHOT thanks to a tamper (video)

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Livia 90, Mazer mini, freshly roasted and grounded coffee... and a tamper made all the difference..!

I was on and off getting good shots, ok shots and very rarely a great shot.. (high expectations)

change settings in the grinder, play with doser of the machine, try different roasts times and themperature.. and it was all in the tamping..

    Espro made it happen..
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrnIfQ8q22o
    as good as it looks..

a friend told me that it was all about the tamping... I say yes to him, but in my head I tho is the grinder and the fresh beans, maybe we are both right... but thanks to him I pay more attention about the tamping, got a Espro tamper (click at 30lbs) and it made all the difference... plus now I can have GREAT shots over and over...

so if your shots are missing something check the tamper..;)

    cheers,
    Juanjo

Thats a good-looking shot, but your method seems to go against everything Ive learned.
    1) half-fill basket
    2) knock twice to collapse
    3) overfill basket
    4) knock twice to collapse
    5) scrape off excess
    6) tamp hard
    7) knock once lightly
    8) tamp lightly and polish
    9) flush
    10) insert handle in group and pour...

Man, thats one UGLY doserless mod! That mod and your procedure looks extremely anal but look at those results! Impressive valley on your shot.

Did the Espro tamper really make the difference? Were you that anal about your dose, distribution and other shot preparation aspects before the Espro came along?

You made me drool on my keyboard! :)

That pour looked quick - is that a result of the naked portafilter?

Cant argue with the result, though - looks lush.

I like the sound of the click at 30 pounds - takes out heaps of the guess work!

Nice shot too! Just reading flatwhites method above, sounds like he/she would have one hell of a chipped p/f with all that knocking! ;)

    James,
you can hurts some one feelings calling "UGLY" there beloved modifications/equipment...
but dont worry, you wont hurt mine... when I bought that black funnel in AutoZone (auto parts store in the US) I knew I wasnt going for a pretty mod... but still I like it a hell lot more than the doser.. that mash I put on top made a big difference too.. a little extra work but worth the end result.
And yes, I was very anal about tamping before... putting way more than 30lbs... I was driving meself nut thinking WTF Im doing wrong..!

    Splashalot,
going by the books is few seconds short... but dont know if I want to mess with anything.. Im extremely satisfied... and same setting with double basket takes the regalementary 30 seconds..
weird that with a triple basket the machine takes less time than with a double..:/

    Thanks Doug and Flatwhites..

wow, yum! yum! I began to salivate when the pour started. nice!

I agree with you about espro and how much is 30lb of pressure. I thought that 30lb was a lot of more until I bought an Espro tamper.

    Congrats mate.

I think it looks like it was always there.
Good job and not ugly, as I was expecting from the comments above.

The collapsing method is a very Australian thing. Americans and Scandinavians rarely collapse.

I would include a distribution method in step 5 and take out step 7. That in my opinion is good technique.

Not that I know anywhere near as much as David, but I second getting rid of step 7.

Think about it...what purpose does it serve?
Its said it can potentially cause channeling by breaking the seal around the edges; the following light tamp wont fix that.
