I take it you mean its squealing before you put the tip in the milk?
Hi all,
Recently, when I turn the steam knob on my Silvia when I froth milk, it gives out a squeal. This sound is not unlike a noisy tap.
Is there a washer similar to a tap that I may have to change?
Has anyone experience something similar? Any explaination or suggestions?
Thanks guys.
Cheers

I get that every now and then too, Franjae.
i dont hink its a problem... its just the milk crying from the pain
I get a squealing noise when I froth small volumes of milk, especially in a narrow milk frothing container.

If I have the tip too close to the bottom of the jug she squeals like a Banshee! ;D. Can also get pinging off the bottom of the jug if I open the tap up too much.
Errr, no guys.......I am not referring to the sound of milk....
The noise occurs when you turn the steam knob and it appears that the steam pressure has something to do with it. If you jiggle with the knob, the squeal disappears or reappears. Please, no sicko comments !!! ::)

Sorry, Franjae, but I havent experienced the squeal (which generally happens when the tip is too close to the bottom of the jug) in my Silvia.
May be worthwhile removing the 4 self-tapping screws which hold the top cover in place, and looking at the steam wand connection to the boiler to see if it emits steam from there. If it does, theres your source of noise.

It could also be scale or debris partially blocking a hole in the tip. Try pulling the tip off and see if the noise is still present. If not check for debris in the tip and descale if necessary.

So when you turn it on full, without putting it in a cup or milk, she squeals? But only sometimes, and when you jiggle the knob it may come or go?. :( Hope its nothing serious.
How old is it? Are you able to get any warranty action on it? Are you in a position to send it to someone for repair ? Are you able to repair it yourself. HAve a look at www.coffeeparts.com.au. They have an illustrated parts break down of the bits they sell for Silvia, and others.

Thanks Boris,
I am sure the noise is related to the steam knob. When shutting the knob after steaming, it squeaks. is there a washer in there that may require attention? I will have a look at coffeeparts site in the meantime.

p/s the machine is about three years old.
Franjae,
Theres supposed to be a clip somewhere inside the steam knob assembly. Perhaps it needs replacing. When I took my Silvia in for servicing they replaced some bits in the steam knob because the knob was getting stiff (I dare you!). I dont know what they did but when I got it back I found it was nicely spring-tensioned again. Ive been told the steam knob is supposed to unscrew (anticlockwise) all the way off and you can examine the parts therein, but mine only unscrews so far and then stops.
If its squealing because of escaping steam, I guess it would get hot and leak some steam or drip from the knob . Are you finding this? (I wont say any more about hot, dripping knobs).
Rob
OK I wont touch that, ;D, too easy. After having a look at coffeeparts, it could well be you have broken or at the least, a dodgey spring with in the steam valve. How handy are you?
Maybe its time to upgrade?? :-?
Boris
Thanks guys,
Heh-heh.....stiff knob and squealing Silvia.........
Well, I am handy but if I dont know what Im looking for.....unless I just pull the steam knob assembly off and take a look. No steam or drips at present, so maybe Ill just put up with it for now. Ill wait till I have a free weekend to pull it apart.
Just thought someone might have had that problem before.
