    Silvia has gone Crotchless!

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi All,

Well I went and butched my NEW Commercial PF in the interest of CoffeeSnobs science *;) Much to my wifes "Grrrrr " ;D

We have taken Before and after shots and shots during the pour. Suprisingly, we did find it smoother and more fuller body and seemed a bit sweeter.

    Heres the pics

    Shot B4
    After
    Shot Progress

One of the most surprising things was you can hear the shot "Fizz" in the glass.

BTW the basket is the standard Rancilio double filter. You could fit a quad basket in a crotchless PF ;)
Also you dont get tiger stripes you get leopard spots ;)

A big bonus is its much easier to clean. :D

Only minus I can see is you can no longer pull 2 single shots at once. I guess those coffee gods websites claiming that you can are false. Fancy that ;)

We kept our original one for that till I can get another commercial one :D

We will get gwdcoffee around to do a blind taste test shortly so stay tuned.

    Cheers

Good work Rich. Any chance of getting pictures of the pour (you know looking up towards the basket)? You may need to use a mirror. Alternatively, I know a guy whose name starts with E and ends with d....... ;)

Here is a View looking up into the portafilter.

The Mod is done easy enough, just run a holesaw through the bottom of the cup. Then clean off the rough edges with a file and some sand paper. Too easy.

This cant be done with the original design filter handle as the handle will fall off. (You have been warned) The Rancilio commercial filter handle however works a treat.

IRT the Hole saw idea. A Café has done the same thing here too. They got a Fairly cheap holesaw that matched the size of the base of the Filter and cut out the desired hole. The hole saw was purchaed through the "warehouse", cheap holesaw but it did the job,(Actually it was me that did the cutting and polishing) I still cant justify doing it though, and for the temperature sake, (The filter is on the groupcup head all of the time anyway).

I suppose its a bit of fun for you all, (I just getting old and set in my ways) :)

It seems to be all the rage at the mo and the mod is simple and the shots taste better.

you also have greater clearance under the group for mugs. So you can have a double size single ;D

--edited--. *But anyway I am reposting my views on this topic again. *I purchased a hole saw set from Bunnings after reading the numerous posts on coffeegeek site. *Just do a search for bottomless and you will get heaps of posts on the topic.

I drilled from inside out. *The end result was not as professional as if u used a dedicated metal hole saw mounted to a bench drill.

Nevertheless it was acceptable by my standards. *

I have since tested the bottomless portafilter, and I must say that a marked improvement was observed. *The shots tasted sweeterl, I cant explain it ...

I highly recommend this mod. *Its very easily done by yourself, just make sure that your portafilter is okay for the cut, and does not weaken the joint too much.

My only issues with this is that the cup is now too far away and its causing splashing ... I probably need to raise the cup somehow. *A simple solution I read was to just put the cup on top of an upside down cup.

It well worth the $5 or so spent on this project. *If you have a spare portafilter lying around, take this long weekend to do the mod.

In my opinion, I cannot see the sense in buying a new portafilter just to cut it. *Then again ... if your portafilter design does not stand up to the "operation" that might be your path.

Please share your experiences with your DIY operations!

Interesting you did it this way Tom! The quality of the cutout can also be impromed by securing the Groupcup in a vice mounted on a drill press and using the drill press to do the cutting. (This allows for minimal movement)
The Café we did it for was happy with the job we did. If you have access to a scotch bright wheel, this cleans up the cut very nicely and follow it up with a good buff-up and polish.

Unless I can find an old group cup I wont be doing this to my own Groupcups.... Theyre just toooooooooo expensive

You are right FB, but getting the "right" equipment is rather expensive and hard to justify. For those of you who live in Sydney, you might want to check out coffeegeeks site ... a bloke there by the name of fad, can help you to cut your portafilter for you.

I suppose you will get a more professional looking one with the right tools. But I am happy with my job, will post a pic ... when I can. I must say I wasnt too gentle with my cutting, I tend to brute force my way ...
