Anyone make a Bakelite handled Tamper?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I really like the look and feel of the Bakelite portafiltro handle on my Elektra and started thinking that a matching Tamper would be nice.

Anyone know of a manufacturer that makes a good tamper in Bakelite?

How about our Bogav? It has a duroplast handle

Interesting option - does it have a wood grain appearance? I cant quite make it out in the picture as its a fairly dark specimen.

    Cheers.

Doubt you will have much luck with a Bakelite tamper handle Herzog, the material is an early plastic and not used much nowadays, modern plastics have taken over.
Talk Coffees Bogav duroplast handle looks similar to Bakelite, nice looking tamper. :)

Yeah I realise its a very old fashioned material - but it has a classic retro look, which I assume is why Elektra use it, despite being expensive to produce.

I googled up Duroplast, and Wiki describes it as a close relative of Bakelite. Interesting indeed.

    Hi Herzog

The Bogav doesnt have a wood grain finish. *Ive been using one at work and am loving it. *So much so that Ive decided to stock them in the shop.

If however, you really have your heart set on a bakelite tamper, google impod tamper. *They do produce a bakelite tamper and the handle is similar in shape to the Bogav, though again, perhaps not in woodgrain.

Oh, and the Impods are expensive!

    Cheers!

Do Electra still make machines with Bakelite handles?
As I recall one of the problems with old fashioned Bakelite was its tendency to degenerate (over a long period of time) under hot conditions, I imagine the material would have been modified since then.

Yeah, I have two genuine Elektra portafiltri in Bakelite.

Apparently they sometimes ship with a rosewood handle, but mine came with the Bakelite.

The feel and appearance is simply beautiful, hence the search for a matching tamper!

Re: Anyone make a Bakelite handled Tamper?

I would have thought youd be after a material without a wood grain pattern if you were looking for Bakelite. As far as I know the Impod is the only tamper that you can get a bakelite handle.

However if you ARE after something with a wood-grain appearance then Wenge is a good option. We make the Deluxe tamper handle in this wood. Predominantly black, with a dark brown grain. Thereve been a couple of requests to make this in the Barista range too and while nothings happened about that its a vague possibility, at least as a limited run.

Bakelite rods can still be purchased today in different wood patterns and colours
Find a woodworker and ask if they can turn it to a similar shape to your current Group Handle

Here is some info I found on the net about Bakelite http://www.nimrodplastics.com.au/product-bakelite.htm

Bakelite *is a brand named material based on the thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride, developed in 19071909 by Dr. Leo Baekeland. Formed by the reaction under heat and pressure of phenol and formaldehyde, generally with a wood flour filler, it was the first plastic made from synthetic components. It was used for its nonconductive and heat-resistant properties in radio and telephone casings and electrical insulators, and was also used in diverse products such as kitchenware, jewelry, pipe stems, and toys. In 1993 Bakelite was designated a ACS National Historical Chemical Landmark in recognition of its significance as the worlds first completely synthetic plastic.

If you really want one done I can make one for you. Our tampers are normally custom-made anyway so its no big issue to do custom work beyond the scope of just tampers. So long as the material can be sourced and turned (yes and yes to Bakelite) we can potentially make them out of anything.

In the past weve done tamper handles in Sheaoak, Zebrano, Olivewood and Cocobolo to name a few, a Deluxe base in Aluminium Bronze and have also done a few porta-filter handles in the past for people whove wanted something special. This one for example we did for a Faema Faemina which originally had a plastic handle that had cracked - the replacement was done in ebony which came up looking a treat.

Provided the final product is well bonded it should turn OK. Alternatively a complete bone would work provided we can stay within the dense outer cortical region - you may still need some sort of filler for the less dense *intermedullary region towards the centre, such as an epoxy resin. Be just the thing to show off at this years Crusaders On Caffeine forum. ;)

Just dont ask us to send one overseas - I think it might raise a few eyebrows in Customs! :o

    Back on topic now... ::)

Ive just made some phone calls and can source some natural Bakelite locally. How much the overall product ends up costing is unknown but looking at the material cost it should be substantially LESS than $320, in either a Barista or Deluxe tamper.

Of course being a somewhat brittle material youd have to handle with care - its not really the sort of material Id choose for a tamper so I doubt Id be making this a regular in our product range, but as a one-off its feasible.

Let me know if you want one.

In colour, i.e. browny colour, as opposed to the branches from bakelite trees :P Nah, as opposed to one of the rainbow varieties KK posted. I didnt even know it was available in colours so had to ask and thus specify here which material I was talking about.

And its arrived. The colour match is very close to the Elektra Portafilter handles. Check it out. As far as Im aware its the worlds only Pullman Tamper in Bakelite.

Nice work by Greg and his team.

Greg - I am presently looking at a Faema Faemina Red Label - the early model with brown bakelite handles. One of the handles is cracked & requires replacing to bring the machine up to full pristine condition. Could you make a matching bakelite handle and one that also matches the existing bakelite colour? I could send you a photo for assessment. A new handle would require a circular hole to allow for a spigot to the stainless steel shaft to enable the bakelite hand to be pushed home? I have a couple of days to make up my mind as to whether I buy the machine - so here is hoping you receive this in time. Regards & thank you

Whoops sorry for the late reply, only just found this. Yep should be able to do that if you're still interested. Bakelite does have different textures so it may not match the style of yours but I'll do what I can. Flick me an email enquiries-nospam@gregpullman.com and we can sort the details.
