    Steaming Baby Gaggia

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I have a Baby Gaggia about 12 yrs old.

After first 4 years Spent $200 with Coffee Mio Melb for a service including new Eaton pump, steam thermostat and various gaskets washers.

It lately squirts out heaps of steam through the brew head when pushing the hot water brew switch. This continues for about 10 secs till water finally comes through and I can then stop the pump, insert the filter holder and make a cuppa.

I unscrewed the solenoid and there was no blockages that I could see. Does the solenoid pull completely apart? I could pull the cylinder most of the way out easily but didnt want to force it or have springs etc flying about!

I have also tried unscrewing the boiler to chek for scale etc but could not undo the allen screws.May try a longer lever next time.

What could be this steaming problem? Can anyone help please.

Sounds like the boiler is not primed at the beginning of the heat cycle.

Have you tried running water through when you first turn the machine on until its flowing nicely through the group? Also repeat with the steam wand.

Also may be the thermostat is faulty and overheating the water.

If the pump seems to come good actually pushing water through the coffee at pressure, then it may not be the pump after all.

Yes both run nicely - Then if I let it warm up for 15min or so I get a very strong spluttery steam spray coming out of the group.
Turning on the steam valve gives instant steam without needing to push the Steam button.
The machine does seem to be hotter than it used to be.

Could it be the steam thermostat then?

It would appear that the BREW thermostat is faulty. It is simply allowing the boiler to heat up too long beyond the calibrated limit. It is acting more like a steam thermostat than the brew one it is supposed to be.

I would imagine its a simple matter of replacing it -- well, it is on the Silvia, anyway.

    Good luck,
