    Silvia leaking from grouphead gasket

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi

Ive been lurking around coffeesnobs for a while and read with interest many of the posts that people have contributed. Ive been a bit of a coffee fan for a short while, maybe 6 months, but after finding this site and reading the discussions I purchased a silvia/rocky doserless combo from Coffee and Things in Randwick.

Anyway. my question relates to the Silvia grouphead gasket. Basically, if I filll up the basket as much as I can and screw the portafilter into the group head I get leaks coming from the group when I run the pump. If I slightly reduce the amount of coffee in the basket so the portafilter fits in more easily then I get no leaks. In both cases the portafilter handle is in roughly the same position when screwed into the grouphead it just required a bit more force with the fuller basket but not an extreme amount.

Is it possible to overdose on the silvia and this causes the leaks, or do you think the gasket needs to be replaced?

The silvia is about 4 months old.

    Thanks

    Paul

Gday Paul and welcome to the forum.
I dont think that your gasket needs to be replaced after 4 months, I think that the leaks have got more to do with how much coffee youre putting in the basket. You certainly can overdose, or even choke Miss Silvia.
If you have to wrench the portafilter handle into the machine, youve go too much coffee in there.
Another thing that may be causing the leaks is that the gasket isnt completely free of coffee grounds. The coffee grounds that are left on the gasket go hard after a while and diminish the seal between the portafilter and the gasket.
    Hope this helps.

I found that mine has stopped doing this now that I purge it before whacking the handle in. I just give it 5(ish) secs to release the pressure build up.. makes for heaps better shots. You just need to be at the front of the temp cycle i.e. about 30 secs after lights out. Give it a go with your full filter and see what happens

yeah, thanks for that guys. Ill give the flushing a whirl.

The reason I asked is because here at work we have a Giotto and however much coffee I put in it seems to cope with it as long as the I can close the portafilter.

Just a quick query for you, when you say that your Silvia portafilter is closed, what position is it in?
Ie, if the handle is 90 degrees to the face of the machine is 6 oclock, what position is yours?
The handle on my Silvia is approx. 5.30-5 oclock when its fully locked in.

The same, pretty much 5-5:30. Admittedly when the basket is fuller its slightly harder to get the portafilter handle to that position.

Definitely sounds like an over-packed basket. If you have scales, measure the amount, and if it is anything above 18 -20 grams youll find things are getting pretty tight.

I dont know about the 5:30 position (is that am or pm? ;D) Sounds way over-tight there. On mine, its more like 6.00 - 6.30. What a difference an hour makes!

Re: Silvia leaking from grouphead gasket

    Hi Paulio,

My Silvia leaks just like you describe, but only if Ive carelessly put too much coffee in the basket. Even a 1/2 a gram above my regular updose will make it harder to lock the portafilter into its usual place and then I know it will probably leak.

Re portafilter locking position: this can vary according to the thickness of the group gasket. My machine came with quite a thick gasket and the portafilter was totally locked in tight-as-can-be at the 7.30 oclock position, even with an empty basket! The gasket was replaced (presumably with one of the correct thickness) when I got Silvia serviced and now it locks in at about 5 oclock, which seems to be the norm.

    Cheers,

    Rob

Group seal wont need replacing after 4 months. Its common to get leakage over the top of the group handle *on silvia* when the filter is overfilled.

This is not a problem repeat, not a problem. Simply clean the group ring area and go again with slightly less coffee in...which is to say, with correct amount coffee in, because the other way that causes leakage over the top is when the thing is overfilled.

Particular machines have particular characteristics, this is one of silvias characteristics. Someone menioned giotto....overpacking the filter in a giotto will not phase the giotto...different scenario & characteristics for a completely different machine.

Pay particular attention to dose of coffee in filter and, *good even tamp resulting in a *clean "polished" surface on the puk.

    regardz,
    FC.
