What sort of a base is needed during the tamping?
What are the pros and cons of bottomless v regular?

Hey there languid. I use a small tamping mat for mine (check Coffee Parts - abt $11).

Pros for me are that I see the pour, which makes it a great diagnostic tool, plus I just love watching naked pours. ::)

Cons are theyre a bit messier (especially when you start out) and you cant split your shot.

Some people claim that it tastes slightly different, you would have to try it and see.

Apart from that, pretty much what GregJW said, although perhaps it might be worth adding a bit about what he meant by "diagnostic tool"...

Normal PF can hide some flaws in your dosing and tamping, whereas the naked will show if the dosing and tamping are within acceptable parameters, particularly good for finding if you have channeling problems causing uneven extraction for example.

Theres plenty of Utube videos showing what you want to see.

I think they are relatively expensive if you just need some diagnostic help for a short time, unless you can borrow one,
but if you really like the naked pour all the time, and dont need to split pours into two cups, and dont mind the extra mess, they are great.

    Thanks guys.
I know I need to upgrade my grinder as a priority.
I might try going naked after I do the grinder purchase.

any recommendations on buying one vs modifying an existing one? A lot of machines come with 2 group handles - single and double spout. I never use the single and was going to get out a hole saw and file and nakedise it - is that fine to do?

Theres plenty of threads around here on home mods.
i know people that have bought naked handles and/or sent them off to engineering shops to get cut out on a lathe.
Ive done a few for mates with a hole saw now, and as long as you set your drill speed nice and slow and use pleanty of lubricant on the cut, you should be able to forget about the file. bit of brasso on a rag and youre sweet.
if at all possible, it does make a HUGE difference having access to a drill press/bench drill whatever you want to call it haha.

Let us know how you go mate :D
