    Drooling Silvia

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hey everyone in Cs land,
just need a bit of help, my Silvia recently has started to leak when i am pulling a shot, usually out the sides of the top of the group handle and sometimes running down to the handle of the group and dripping on my bench, does this mean the group seal has gone??? If so how do I replace it???? :-?

    Thanks all

    DD

    Re: Drooling Silvia

    DD,

It might be the seal, but it is not something that should require frequent replacing.

Basically, the group of the Silvia seems to leak like this when:
Too much coffee in the basket (IE: over the circlip line).
    Crud around the grouphead.
    Crud in the shower screen.
    Seal is shot.

    How old is your Silvia?
    What is your cleaning regimen?
    Do you backflush?
When was your last clean and how thorough was it?
Do you have a grouphead brush?

Try doing a very thorough clean (see if you can check the state of the seal when you have the shower screen off ) before going down the path of changing the seal.

If it IS the seal, you will need to get your hands on a replacement (check with a sponsor or evilbay), AND instructions on how to do the replacement without hurting anything.

    Hope thgat helps.

    Brett.

    Re: Drooling Silvia

    Hey Brett,
Thanks for the reply...yeah i am very meticulous with my clean and i do black flush at the end of every session of use. about every three months i do a deep clean both descale and full machine clean. My Silvia is only about a year and a half old.

i think you might be right with doseing levels....my rocky is a D/L so i might be over doing it a little....i try to stick to the line...but somtimes i go over slightly.

i have herd that leaving the machine on for extended periods can shorten the life of a group seal is there any truth in this???

    Thanks again

    Re: Drooling Silvia

Brett, you did such a good job on the above reply there was no point jumping in but....now there is another question!

Derk, a seal is a seal is a seal. How long does it last, nobody knows!

However. I do personally overpack all my coffee filters (ie irrespective of what equipment is being used) and often enough get leakages *over the top of silvia group handle. I do the jiggle with the blind and whalla, next coffee is usually ok. Ofcourse the next coffee after a leak over the top usually gets the group handle tightened up a lot further as well....... Having said that, I generally find that this is a "weak" point with silvia and so...I live with it or atleast, try not to overpack too much. Other machines will withstand overpacking a lot more than her.

Anyway if it needs a seal well, it needs a seal. I could say that you might try removing the encumbent seal and seeing if the groove it lives in is clean and clear and not encrusted up with gunk, but once you remove an aged seal, it wont really want to go back in again so a new one is required to be on hand....never remove a seal without having another on hand.

And yes, the more you leave your machine ON, the less the seal will last. It will be affected by the prolonged effect of heat rather than by the amount of actual use in coffee making.

We often tell clients....if you are not using the machine, turn it off or you will wear it out in other ways.....

    Regardz,
    FC.
