Need help with backflushing *my ECM Giotto Premium

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi everyone *:)

I have been using my ECM Giotto Premium almost every day for some time now, and I love it! *However, I am embarrassed to say that I have not been backflushing regularly... *:-[

Today I thought I would go ahead and backflush the machine for the very first time. *I found some instructions on the internet specific for the Giotto, and off I went:

I put some backflushing powder in the blind filter, attached the filter handle to the group head and ran some water. *According to the instructions, "when you turn the pump off, water trapped in the portafilter escapes through the pressure release valve". *This is where things went wrong! *I dont think the water that was trapped in the portafilter went anywhere! *When I tried to remove the filter handle there was obviously a whole lot of pressure built up, and when the filter came off the group head there was a big BANG*:o and half my kitchen was covered in a paste of backflushing powder and hot water! *The shower head and a heavy rubber ring also came flying out of the group head and landed on the kitchen floor.

Can anyone tell me where I went wrong? *And pardon my ignorance, but where exactly on the Giotto is the "pressure release valve"?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! *:P

    Cheers!

Yulia - it sounds as if you didnt return the lever to the down position to enable the valve to open. But Im sure you did! Its just as when you are pulling a shot. The pressure relief valve is the one that directs water into the dreg tray. Thats what the tray is for mainly, rather than drips from the PF. Have you noticed this happening? Its the big pipe behind the group head. Either that or somehow you used so much cleaner that the valve got clogged. You should have got some foamy gunk coming out of the valve and into the tray. The rubber ring was the group head seal - it holds the shower screen in place as well.
Do you backflush without powder at all with your blind filter? I would guess that you had a seriously dirty shower screen - but the real experts here will probably have some clearer ideas for you!!

    That sounds really wrong *:(

It sounds like you did everything correctly.

The water under pressure should exit through the bottom of your E61 group head, ie down near the bottom and into the waste water tray thingy.

The same thing should be happening when you turn the pump off after making a shot, just not to the same extent.

Maybe the 3 way solenoid valve is faulty? Just a guess. Someone like Fresh Coffee would probably know, or whoever you bought the machine from should offer some support... hopefully.

If the Giotto has not been detergent backflushed recently, the lever may not stick at the lower position and will pop back up. The build up of coffee oils can make it move too freely. It is possible you placed the lever down but it popped back up almost in the same motion (its only a matter of 15 degrees or so, so the switch is not depressed). The time may not have been sufficient to release the pressure buildup.

Lucky you didnt have any of the cleaning solution spray in your face/eyes.

Hard to know whats going wrong from your notes, as it is an easy process - only takes a few minutes. In fact I just did my Giotto tonight and its all very routine.

You did lower the lever to the off position right? Also, how long did you
    "run" it for?

Hey you guys, thanks for your replies *:D

I think Framey might be right - it sounds like the pressure release valve is faulty. *I dont remember EVER seeing any water being released from that part of the machine! *Not ever!! *Can this be possible?? *Ive never had a problem making coffee before. *I hope I have not permanently damaged my lovely Giotto... :(

I guess Ill take it back to where I bought it from and see if they can do something. *I bought it second-hand, so no warranty as far as I know unfortunately.

In answer to your questions, I definitely moved the lever to the full "off" position after running the water. *I ran the water for ten seconds three times with ten seconds break in between each time (this is what it said to do on the backflushing powder container).

    Cheers *:)
