    The Bezzera Hobby

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi gals and guys,
    * I am a newbie getting more confused by the minute as I search for an espresso machine.
I have just seen this "baby" of the Bezzera range and was wondering if anyone has any experience with it. It certainly looks the goods and going on the Bezzera reputation may be worth consideration.
    * The only concern is that my KG100 grinder may struggle to grind fine enough for it.
Ill be grateful for any help.
    Thanks,
    Ken.

    Hi Ken,

Id recommend that you contact Barazi (Chris) with any queries about a particular Bezzera machine as they are the importers and a respected Site Sponsor of CS ;D. Not knowing which BZ machine you are talking about, I dont know what its performance limits are but I would suspect that your grinder is going to be up against it. Would suggest that you consider an Ibertal Challenge as a good starting point and work your way up from there. Our Site Sponsors also sell these grinders,

    Cheers,
    Mal.

    Ken,

As a relative newbie to this site (but not to the coffee art) welcome onboard.

The quality of the grinder is more important than that of the coffee machine itself. The importance Ive seen ranked as:

    1. Barista skills,
    2. beans,
    3. grinder and then
    4. machine

    - and Id agree with that within reason.... some machines cant produce a decent espresso no matter how good the other elements are.. :(

I havent had any experience with the Bezzera range, but believe they are excellent. I have had experience with the KG100 grinder and, even after "tweaking" it to get finer grounds, the result was barely adequate for espresso..... and there is a lot of powder in the grounds as well.

You certainly need to think about getting a better grinder if you are looking at machines of the quality of the Bezzera range. :)

    Hi Mal snd Javab,
    Thanks for the quick replies.
*Mal Ive just emailed Chris and will ring him at a decent hour this morning to arrange a demo. The Iberital is one Ive looked at too.Or I may even lash out on a Rocky.

*Javab with my barista skills theres only one way to go and thats up. Id never seen this model until Sunday at Merlos ( in Brisbane ) where I spotted it sitting beside a Gaggia. I cant imagine it being anything less than great like its more expensive relatives.Ill report back after checking it out.
*Ill have to upgrade the grinder as well...Ah its only money.

    Thanks again guys,
    Ken.

    Re: The Bezzera Hobby

    ramking,
id agree pretty much with javabs estimation- another is 50% barista 25% beans 25% machine

having said that my (free- only said because i could get paranoid about owning it!) bezzera loves me and i love my bezzera!

look into a really good grinder- even with my old saeco, the step up from a cheap grinder to the cunill (dubbed baradum the dark tower by my son- spelling right?) was like day and night

its all a journey, but a rewarding one

    best of luck

    * Well I heard the sirens song this morning and paid Chris a visit at Barazi.
After a quick friendly demo and lots of advice I left with a lighter wallet and a heavier car.
    * Now the day at work will just drag on and on because my new toys are home alone.
Oh well the weekend looks fully booked now...Whoopee!!!
    * Many thanks to Chris at Barazi for his advice and attractive package deal for the Bezzera Hobby and a Rocky doserless.
I can thoroughly recommend him for a great price and service.
*Hopefully Ill have some pics and a short review to post over the next day or so.

    Ken.

    Re: The Bezzera Hobby

    * Well I have been playing with my new toys for a few days and I am very impressed.Apart from one problem with the Hobby that Chris from Barazi quickly fixed and set me straight on ( shall we call it one of the quirks of the breed ) its been all good since then.
    * I think the Hobby should be renamed the Obsession because I just want to use it all the time.Oh well who needs sleep.Ive only had limited experience with other machines IE used a mates Ristretto for a week to getused to the process.all I can say is that the baby Bezzera is great.I had little trouble setting it up to get a good double shot after only a few tries with different grinds.I guess the Rocky should take a lot of credit too.Although the KG100 can grind fine enough for the Hobby its right at the finest setting so Im glad I took the plunge and bought Rocky as well.
*As I said the Hobby is great and where it really shines for me is with the steam output. It has a 250ml copper boiler and it seems so quick and powerful compared to the Ristretto.Once again I have no experience with other machines so I plan to do a course here in Brisbane where you can use your own machine. That will give me a better idea comparing it to others in the course.Sorry to keep raving but even this poor soul has improved his milk frothing-steaming technique since I took possession of the Hobby.
*Anyway all in all Im very pleased with both the Hobby and Rocky and must thank Chris from Barazi for his help and attractive deal.I can thoroughly recommend him and his products.
Now I can start roasting and enjoying the beans from the starter pack..oh the fun.

*And finally in the words of Pate Biscuit...heres a picture.

    Cheers,
    Ken

I am still havent ordered a machine yet maybe the fact that it is red will help me sell it to my wife? , it is her favourite colour. Good to hear you have made the right choice for you, and good to hear review on a different machine as well.

    Hi Brett,
Yes Im very happy with it.It feels solid weighs 10kgs so it should last. And just to tease your wife it comes in Red, White or Black.Although Im sure I saw a dark gray one at Barazi when I picked mine up.Now how can she refuse such variety.

    Cheers,
    Ken.

    Looks good Ken.
Heres a pic of my big Bezzera being all parental to my ECM Botticelli- which is a little similar to your Hobby- Id never seen the Hobby before, so thanks. Im very glad youre so pleased with it.
You probably already know this site, but I think it probably applies to all of the larger single boilers so here goes:

    Re: The Bezzera Hobby

Hi Brett (another one boy this is confusing)

Like you Id never seen one until a couple of weeks ago here in Brisbane.I was lucky because Chris at Barazi had this one as a demo so I got it for $500.While the other one was $699 retail. So Im quite pleased.
Thanks for that link I havent seen it before.Ill experiment and see how I go.
Like the Sylvia you have to do a couple of things to speed the process up.But thats part of the attraction of the design.Well lets call it attraction so much politer than @#$%^&.
I only had one glitch. The 2nd time I tried to use it no go.The green light came on straight away and it didnt heat up.No Problems a quick trip to Barazi confirmed my thoughts and the thermal cutout had been tripped. Its fiddly to get to but now I know how.Hopefully wont happen again as I have the manual to guide me.Although the translation can be amusing/confusing.

Great the net drops out halfway through my reply.

Ill have to get some internal pics to compare it to your ECM and other similar sized machines. They all look like theyll share some components.
I showed the Hobby your Bezzera and told him to get on the Roids so hell grow big like that.

    Cheers,
    Ken.

    I had a laugh ;D Yes Mate,

That is mine and it is Red..... Its got a few small chips here and there on a couple of the edges and since I am going to get the chassis bead-blasted and repainted, I might as well have the cover done too.... all nice and bright and shiny. Cant hurt ;D,

Hello Ken (or maybe another Bezzera Hobby user): I just bought a Hobby and I would love to cut down on my learning curve w/ using the machine. Any advice on grinding, coffee, pods?
Andy, If you have any advice, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks a ton! Mark
