    Saeco Via Venezia/ Brew Temperature?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Hi all, my first post, another newbie!
Ive read that the coffee temperature is supposed to be around *83 degrees according to Choice mag. When I measure it, I *only average 55-60 with preheated cups. If I run a small amount of "green light water" thru the portafilter, I get up to around 73 degrees.
The green light also goes out within 5secs when brewing and frothing, is this standard or perhaps the thermostat needs changing? Machine is only two weeks old.

    hi mojava- very cool tag!

espresso should actually be around 90- 93 C (some debate that a degree or so either way of this is ok)
This is measured where the water hits the puck, not into a cup, which will dramatically lower the temp depending on its own temp and material
Green light going out then is ok- normal for that machine (my son has my old one)
A couple of questions- what are u measuring with?- really needs to be something like a thermocouple bead attached to a multi meter etc
I found with my saeco that I couldnt rely on the green light as ok brew temp- I ran water into cups until the green light went off and back on at least 3 times to get all the pipes etc up to temp

Even though this is a diff machine the info on heating and steaming still stands

ps I still like the Via Venezia- u can get a non pressurised handle for about $50

hi,telemaster, (got one of those at home too!)
Im measuring with a Charbucks milk thermo. I immerse all the stem in a preheated spice jar. If I run the water thru an empty preheated portafilter, 73 is all I get. Thermo is pretty accurate as when I measure the frothed milk in the red zone it is just shy of burnt taste,
    using the same method.
Ive also been doing the multiple warmup, flush dance!
"Cheating Miss Silvia "- Loooks like Im already doing a lot of that but I will refine it.
It seems you have to keep on prompting the boiler to stay up to temperature....
Thats a good tip with the timer, too.
    Thanks for your help,
tomorrow I get a non pressurized portafilter and a tamper, is a heavy metal one any better I wonder?

metal tamper which fits closely is best
    brett
ps ill try measuring with milk therm and compare

just did that - no comparison!
I ran boiling water into an espresso glass - 60 ml - a couple of times, emptied it and put the milk therm in and ran a shot of water into it while at the same time putting a thermocouple probe into the spout of my portafilter (the one which was also putting water into glass)
Guess what- milk therm read approx 62 C and thermocouple read 93 C
Looking at that, I wouldnt be too worried about your brew temp - if anything it could be a bit high
To check wait till light is on and watch water come out of group head minus portafilter- if it gurgles in a boiling sort of way, let it run a few secs firstHope this helps- it sounds like machine is fine!
