    La Marzocco Basket

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I want to give the La Marzocco basket a try in the Silvia - everyone seems to rave about it on A.C.

Have you tried it? Do you know where I can purchase one in Melbourne?

Ive looked at http://www.coffeeparts.com.au/mar/mar1.html (part number 521994), but want to avoid the $10 delivery if possible (seeing the basket only costs $9.25).

    Cheers

My personal experience is that there is little difference between it and the standard Silvia basket - but hey! Perhaps thats a reflection more of my palettes lack of whatever a number of alties say they have! ;-)

I got mine from the States as part of a bigger shipment...

    Re: La Marzocco Basket

I will order the larger lm single and double baskets plus the angled handle, that way the delivery charge wont seem out of proportion, ;) if you dont already have one a blind filter basket is a must have for more effective cleaning of the group head and screen between shots.

Ive never gotten decent crema using the single basket, (my gf finds the double too strong) and the double basket is a bit too small for two cups.

Im tempted to look at the commercial pf for Silvia, the standard one has a slightly bent handle, and Im afraid of breaking it one day while locking and loading...

I have an lm triple basket for two single cappas, while I use only the double for my own (large) cappa...

One can never stop spending on this hobby, can one? ;-)

I would also be interested in a commercial pf for Silvia. Any reports on drawbacks of using it? I will do a check on alt.coffee.

Plenty info on alt.coffee - I would be interested in a double spout. Maybe others in the group would be interested.

I have had a double LM for some 5 years. I love it. Far better than the basket provided. I fit 19g ground coffee in. I bought a single spout and a blind filter at the same time.
Now I would love to buy the Professional PF. Is coffeeparts a good price? I bought the abovementioned things from them.

    Re: La Marzocco Basket

I purchased the LM double filter (part number 300013 - www.coffeeparts.com.au) from Celebrate the Bean last week. Initially I was a little disappointed with it. I found it hard to tamp as the tamper didnt fit all the way, the puck was coming out soft and very wet - not a good look. The espresso was OK, but I wasnt totally satisfied.

I read a little on alt.coffee, coffeegeek and Kenthos previous post (thanks), and I tried grinding more coffee. Silvia was taking 15-15.5g of coffee. Initially I was grinding 17-17.5 for the LM basket. Based on Kenthos previous post, I went for the big kahoona and tried a whopping 19g :o and was amazed with the results. Crema factory, tiger stripes, Guinness effect...insert any other alt.coffeeism as you see fit. ;) I even feel tempted to create a pour video!

Ive found that my grind needed to be adjusted a little courser, and Ive changed the way I dose. Now I dose half into the portafilter, know on the bench and tamp as far as the tamper will go, then dose the remaining coffee and tamp further. This results in a more consistent and level tamp that what I was achieving with the silvia basket (due to my lack of skill - others might not find this).

How does it taste? Richer and tastier - no doubt due to the increased amount of coffee. Im curious to see how the third party (ridgeless) double basket performs (part # 521994) as this seems to accommodate the tamper better. Maybe sometime in the future....

Has anyone tried the LM portafilter and/or the LM triple basket?

We had a coffeegeek gathering at Coffee Alchemy in Dulwich Hill the other day, and Dom from coffeeparts (located just around the corner) came along for a lookysee as he normally does.

Hazel was backwashing her ECM and she put away the angled handles for this job and broughot out the old originals. I was curious and she showed me why. When cleaning the machine down and bachwashing, the hot water youre cleaning the grouphead with overflows and runs down the downward sloping handle and burns your handies.

Just a tip so that youre carefull till you get to know them.

    Hi everyone,
I have a Gaggia classic, and have read rave reviews about the LM basket.

Anyone knows where I can get the ridgeless version? My 58mm tamper gets stuck on my current single shot basket.

I checked the coffeparts site, and they dont have it.

    Thomas,

I think the item number for the ridgeless basket is 521994 on coffeeparts.com.au. The LM original is with the ridge and is item number 300013.

I have had a look at the website again, 521994 is the double shot basket. I guess I will ask coffeeparts if they have a single shot ridgeless basket.

    Thanks for the tip off.

    Re: La Marzocco Basket

ive put a LM 18g basket in my ecm botticelli - www.coffeeparts.com
ive seen the 14 g one and it is similar in size to a commone 14g, but in my experience what ecm and rancilio sell as 14 g is more like 12 g which doesnt make for a rich cup of coffee
the 14 will fit in your portafilter, to use an 18 g one youll need a bezzera, boem a or similar because u need the extra deprth for the deeper basket
18 g equals richer, not necessarily a stronger flavour

    Re: La Marzocco Basket

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but will the LM single/double baskets fit all the Silvia & Gaggia stock & naked PFs?

Whats the difference between the ridged & ridgeless baskets, if I was ordering a new tamper to match?

    Re: La Marzocco Basket

Most of the internet hype I read re the LM baskets seemed to refer to "ridgeless" baskets.

I wanted a larger basket for my Silvia [14g rather than the 12g supplied] but I also thought a ridgeless basket would make dosing and tamping easier.
[I still find this to be the case]

From what I could find, LM baskets are only available ridged, the internet claim was that these ridgeless LMs were incorrectly manufactured [ie without ridges] but tooling-wise, I cant see how this would be possible.

I think either LM just got a ridgeless supply from their manufacturer by accident, or some retailer was telling porkies re their origin. *

Anyway, site sponsor Barazi Bezzera sells a ridgeless 14g basket if youre interested.
    Item Code 5471009.

You may also want to chase up a stronger PF spring, becuase of the lack of ridge.

In my "learning stages" I certainly got a big improvement over the standard Silvia basket, and much easier to pull a consistant shot.
But with practise one should be able to pull a good shot with the Silvia basket.
Nevertheless, the ridgeless Bezzera is my first choice.

    Behmor Brazen - $249 - Free Freight
In all fairness to Rancilio, people are tending to underestimate Silvias double basket.

Assuming theres been no recent downsizing, the standard basket shipped with Silvia is well over 12 grams.

The number stamped on the bottom is 40 100 010

Ive loaded as much as 20 grams into it (it did groan somewhat). But the usual amount I dose is around 17 grams, which it happily accepts.
