Simonelli Oscar - where to buy?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Hi! I have just joined up, after reading the forum pages for sometime, and I have to say that I have learnt a lot between you guys and CoffeeGeeks.
Im a long term user of Baby Gaggias - about 16 years now, and I just know its time to upgrade. I feel that the Simonelli Oscar might be the best bet for us. I want something that makes good coffee but that doesnt require a degree in nuclear physics to obtain a good result. In particular, my wife just wants to be able to press a button or two to get a decent espresso or a long black., Shes pretty good with the New Baby we had to buy when the old one carked it after 13 years, and is highly critical of poor coffee.

Anyway, having read as much as I can, I feel the Oscar might be the go for us. Yesterday I found a string somewhere in CoffeeSnobs comparing the Oscar to a Domobar (I think it was). One member said he could provide info about where to get an Oscar at a good price. I tried to reply, but somehow or other it didnt work, and now I cant even find the original entry!

    Can anyone help?

Not sure of right prices or special offers but these guys sell them:

I dont know if any of the site sponsors stock the Oscars, but if they do Im sure theyll help you out.

I bought mine about 12 months ago from a adelaide hills based retailed called The bake and brew shop. Cost $1150 + $20 delivery. Not sure if they are still selling the product as it isnt on their website any more.

Old website http://www.bakeandbrew.com.au/category18_1.htm but you wont find this category on their home page any more.

While I have had no need to get assistance from the retailer so far, if I was buying again Id seriously consider buying from a dealer that was a specialist coffee hardware supplier.

No complaints about the Oscar though - although there are not too many people around not satisfied with their purchases. Good luck.

Re: Simonelli Oscar - where to buy?

Sorry cant help you with Simonelli any more. There have been a number of changes in importers / agents etc and its just too hard Im afraid...which from my point of view means:

    a) yes Oscar is a nice little machine and very reliable over time....but when you eventually require some service I wouldnt know what direction to point you in any more. Its too difficult for us to chase around trying to find bits for them. If Coffee Parts has them thats well and good but if he doesnt, we wouldnt bother trying to chase them down any more.

    b) in terms of your reference to an old thread in here comparing Oscar to Domobar.....my company used to import Domobar but sold both. There was no comparison in reliability between these two models...at the time, Oscar won hands down.

If you really have your mind set on one, suggest you email simonelli in Italy and find out who their current importer is, then make some telephone calls over here. Thats excatly what we had to do last time we needed bits for one. The price someone quoted above however would I feel, be long gone. You would be more likely to find a price of somewhere under $1500.00, unless you manage to find someone that wants to off load old stock at giveaway prices. There are excepions to everything, but you will have to do some chasing!

    regardz,
    FC.

Re: Simonelli Oscar - where to buy?

Thanks evryone for the advice. Its encouraging to hear that the Oscar seems so successful. If I do get one, I think Ill hang on to the "New Baby", just in case, although I suppose it would be wise to drain the boiler if it is not likely to be used for a long time.

Does anyone know how I can locate the original query on this site where a member asked about whether to buy a Domobar or an Oscar ("Domobar Vs Simonelli Oscar")? It was there on Tuesday, but I cant find it anywhere today, and there were a string of replies, with one member saying he could provide information about where to get one at around $1,000.

    Cheers

No, sadly its not. Im sure it was Simonelli Oscar Vs Domobar (or vice versa), although it just could have been Simonelli Oscar Vs Sylvia (but I dont think it was). I just cant understand why I cant find it, because I referred to it several times on Tuesday. Very strange!

Re: Simonelli Oscar - where to buy?

Hooray! Its OK everyone. I found the entry. "Rancillio Sylvia Vs Nuovo Simonelli Oscar" . (Sylvia, by the way, not Domobar as I originally thought). Posted in July last year.

And to TimO, I have tried the Bake and Brew web site, but it does not seem to be operating, so maybe they have closed. But thanks for the tip. I think Ill take "Fresh Coffees" advice and just check with the Italian manufacturers if I can, before I commit myself to a purchase.

Thanks to everyone for your help

I have been in touch with the Adelaide based agent for Simonelli (Ph 0417807403) but cant remember the name.

I was also provided with the number for the Melbourne based Agent who was Andre (Ph 0407 010037) but never spoke with him.

The bake and brew website seems OK for me. If you want to follow up with Bake and Brew (if the business is still up and running) the business card I have says you can contact Andy or Donna Scotson the proprietors on (08) 8522 6144 or sales@bakeandbrew.com.au

I have the Simonelli agents numbers because the retailer was not able to provide some requested advice at the time of purchase - the reason I made my earlier remarks about buying from a specialist retailer. I wish Id valued the retailers knowledge and support capabilities higher than I did at that time.
