    Solis SL70?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I am considering taking the plunge and buying my first espresso machine. After spending a few months reading this site and others I am tempted to get the Solis SL70. It has a good review on coffeegeek and within my budget but my main reservation is that it does not seem to be in common use or discussed very much on web sites compared to others in its price bracket. Is there a reason for this? Does anyone have personal experience with one of these machines? Would I be better with a more common machine such Sunbeam EM6900 particularly as my teenage offspring are into coffee since I started roasting my own. They have now mastered the mokka pot. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi Semaj,

    Welcome to CoffeeSnobs,

I agree you dont seem to hear much about the SL70. They should be a capable machine for the money, no idea what support is like for them.
I remember reading one user review on CoffeeGeek some time ago, and the whole review was not encouraging. Most others were very keen on the steaming ability, apparently that is very good, but there seemed to be some reliability issues, cant remember what exactly now. But then even Silvias have the odd problem, however there seems to be plenty of help available for them.
OTOH at similiar price is the Imat mokita, which I know some CSs use and it does a very good job for the price, doesnt seem to have many problems, and the Sunbeam twin thermoblock machine is getting good reports, although there is some issues being sorted out by Sunbeam.
ALSO you dont mention anything about a grinder, but (echo) a good grinder is the 2nd most important item, after fresh beans, for good coffee.

    Anyway keep reading, and looking.
    Regards
    Bullitt.

    Hey,

I have a Solis SL-70 myself and I reckons its great for its price range. Doesnt make that good esspreso shots but the steaming ability is awesome. So the milk would be good enough to cover up all the bad tasting shot and it is great.

Persoanally Id go for a Sunbeam 6900 you will find it so much easier therefore more enjoyable to use. Your will probably get far better coffees out of it too. We looked at the Solis before we brought our Silvia (Compared the both of them ) and the Silvia makes far better coffees than the Solis IMHO and the 6900 isnt that far behind the Silvia if at all. If you take ease of use of the 6900 into acount then the Sunbeam is probably better value for money.

If you are into twisting the sales types arm you can get one for a real keen price. We got ours for $480 or there abouts.

But do your research try before you buy but remember the sales staff in the big store have Pretty much no idea what they are doing.

One thing the solis does have going for it if i rememeber right is it has a HUGE amount of steam but then again you will have to wait till it goes from brew temp to steam. On the Sunbeam you can steam and pull a shot at the same time.

Only thing is with the Sunbeam is the Snob value is about zip...............;) But the coffees are pretty darn good.

Have fun looking and let us know what you brought and if you need help or advice there are loads of People here who will help. Even if the Question hsa been asked a few times.

    Cheers
    Rich

Thanks for your advice. Does the EM6900 have the much maligned pressurised baskets? If so is there any benefit in replacing it? My grinder is the Sunmbeam EM0480 which I presume would work well with the EM6900

Yeah, the wait between brew temp and stem temp can be arduous.
One thing I found out about the Solis when a fellow CS/CG was doing some pre-purchase research - when the steam knob is opened, the machine turns on the heating element instantly, this probably helps prevent that lag or drop off until the element kicks in that alot of single boiler machines have with steaming.

Nope none of those crema enhancing dodads which is probably why some people are disapointed with the 6900 when they get it home are are using preground supermarket coffee which is stale and there is little or no hope of crema.
If you cant get fresh roasted go for fresh ground preferably ground yourself and as used as soon as poss after its ground.

You can buy after market non-pressurised filter baskets for the SL70 and SL90 from the Australian importer of Solis, and provided you can grind your coffee appropriately you get a very good shot.

The steam pressure is exceptional and you can texture commercial quality milk which results in a great caffe latte/cappuccino.

Good and underated machine because its not wrapped in stainless steel - which I have never seen add any value to the flavour profile of an extraction. *::)

    Thanks Metreo,
I was hoping someone would have some more useful info about these machines.

    Behmor Brazen - $249 - Free Freight
I know an Aussie owner of the Solis whom Ive emailed this thread to, hopefully hell post.

    The PF size is ~53mm.
Apparently one can get non pressurised baskets for the Solis - the Nemox Junior double basket fits the SL-70
