Someone commented on newbie read too much information that the ecm botticelli had almost too much steam, not good for texturing, needed flushing after 20 min etc
in my experience this is pretty common to all larger single boiler machines- the silvia or any other
on my bezzera hx machine i need to flush any time i extract- unless im doing a constant line of coffees at a party etc- thats just the nature of most (read not necessarily all) machines with very hot water- sure e61 hx machines are the beesknees but dont get the idea they are perfectly stable (i have a little hx at work- isomac millenium and even it needs flushing and isnt more stable than other machines)
re texturing i found that all single boilers ive fiddled with benefitted from the conical 2 hole tip (pr similar) from coffeeparts- the larger holed barrel one that came with the machine is the issue here
another tip (no pun intended) is start emptying the boiler of excess water as soon as u turn on the steam switch and really empty that out
i tried using a thermocouple and i found that the best time to extract is just after the heating light goes out- i have found that the ecm and silvia vary widely in temp through the boiler cycle- the difference i found with the ecm is that it is closer to ideal at just after the light goes out, not a case of wait 39 sec etc

Telemaster, I do all that. There are limitations to a single-boiler machine. The biggest benefit of of a more expensive SB machine over, say, the Silvia, would be (potentially) greater thermal stability (which the Botticelli doesnt have) and the ability to make more coffees before the boiler is exhausted. In hindsight, I reckon it wasnt worth the extra $ over the Silvia.

for david- to each his own- i guess for me i find the ecm easier than the silvia
the ecm boiler is only 1/3 larger and the temp stability is more related to the deadband of the thermostat- quite wide on most machines, probably no diff between sivlia and ecm
after doing thermocouple measurements i found that the temp at the beginning of the new cycle (just after light goes off) is pretty much what id want on the ecm, so i run water into cups, or use the hot water through steam arm to get the boiler light on
-whereas friends have this definite temperature surf thing with silvias- im sure youve read about it- same old get boiler cycle going, then count down because the boiler temp is too high, then also issue of the over pressure valve being set a bit high
i think they are all great but all are compromises- frankly ive been disappointed with the small hx millenium at work- so little steam (but has the same steam tip ive now got on the botticelli)- compared to the bezzera i was lucky enough to be given , its a bit sad
i find it easy to estimate where the temp will be on the ecmsingle boiler- on the e61 machines you still have do the hx flush to cool the group head down and often there is still an element of counting - see:

The reason is both humorous and pathetic- my mother still talks of Dad (a teacher) correcting her grammatical and spelling mistakes in the love letters she sent to him!

Yeah, sorry Viviane about the full stops! My Dad is a cool guy but a good old fashioned pedant. I love good English, can be at times an academic snob, but try not to worship the vehicle but what is expressed in it.
Im also aware that English, like any language, is not static. Even the French with their language academy watchdog havent kept their language pure. The language we have has evolved into what it is and no matter how much we bemoan changes to it, all living things change. The next generation will complain about the generation after it.
And come to think of it, I thought the forum was about coffee!

I discovered what a spelling snob I was when I gave up my 20 year accounting career to study commercial cookery last year. *It has to be said that chefs who teach cooking dont have spelling as a job requirement. *My first teacher (who would be known to a lot of people in food circles) was a poor speller, and I would correct his spelling for him on the basis that he was teaching a lot of teenage apprentices incorrectly. *Then I realised that while I could spell all the fancy terminology, Id only ever read the words and had no idea how to pronounce a lot of the French terms - very embarassing. *So every time Id correct him he would come back at my pronounciation. * I now work for him and while my pronounciation has improved out of sight, the same cant be said for his spelling.....
