    Hi Terry,

This is the other half of the Pullman empire (also known as JaveB)....

Yep, weather has been beaut here (well until a couple of days ago!). Im sure Greg has settled back into his Adelaide lifestyle - and doesnt even miss us ;) ::)

The new tampers wont be much longer and Ill be supplying them ex Perth... so I should be able to fill your order quite quickly once I have them in stock. We have Synesso baskets available now for order from the website - ridged and ridgeless double baskets and single baskets as well.

    Hi JavaB,

are the synesso baskets all over the place size wise. I have two doubles on the work machine (obviously came with the machine and never use the singles) I would prefer not having to buy two new baskets unless you can recommend that the ridgeless baskets are better.

    cheers

Re: Whens the new Pullman coming?

    Terry,

The Synessos are pretty consistent - especially the ridgeless baskets which are amazingly consistent.

I personally prefer the ridgeless and have been using one in my La Cimbali for about a month now..... the main thing I like about them (compared to most other baskets - not just Synesso ridged) - is that the wall is perfectly straight and parallel from the rim of the basket to well below any level you would ever tamp to......

Makes for a beautifully fitting tamper and a truly great tamp.....

As you can tell.... Im very impressed by them..... the ridged are also good... but my personal preference is clear ;) ::) ::)

Re: Whens the new Pullman coming?

Good question VC! I took delivery of the first off-tool sample yesterday from which the final dimensions will be confirmed but its looking good so far. I was hoping to have them on the shelves this month, but while production of 75% of it should be done within the month, one supplier is really holding the show up >:( so I dont think thats going to happen. Ive actually had to start that part again with someone else as the first mob were so slack, but the second lot dont appear a whole lot better so far :( If only they realised how many people theyre holding up! ;D

So much as Id like to name a date, I wont as I cant promise others are as prompt as we try to be. What I can say is the design has been at least two years in the making, there have been at least six rounds of prototypes, the design had input from the baristi at (including) Epic Espresso, Velvet Espresso, Maling Room, Veneziano and St Ali (none have seen the final product so dont run to them to get spy pics or anything! :)), and its going to be the best tamper I can put together for its intended purpose. So if youre after a tamper and youre not in a particular hurry for one, Id recommend waiting to at least see the newie and then decide which style you want - the Deluxe tamper (existing) or the ______ tamper (new one - name under embargo ;))

The new tamper will not replace the existing tamper...... both will be sold.

Price - you will just have to wait for that - sorry. That and the appearance of the tamper will only be known at its release (unless Greg feels VERY generous!)

Re: Whens the new Pullman coming?

Were certainly hoping so. As I said the intention was to have them for sale as of about now, and given thats not happening the next date is ASAP! Realistically you wont see anything this month :( but Id sincerely hope before Christmas; ultimately the arrival date depends on the level of co-operation from those poor suppliers who dont want me to give them my money! ::) Rest assured CS will be one of the first places you hear about it!

While I wont reveal any details of its specifics yet, let me just say that ergonomics was the first item on the list of requirements, and that the prototypes have had a hammering from the pros to make sure the design is right in this area. Plenty find the design of the Deluxe is great, but the new one is even better! :-X

Times no factor for me since the slab of black heart sassafras I bought for a tamper handle has to season for six months anyway :) But I sure hope the handles are still timber, or Ill have to find another use for it!

Re: Whens the new Pullman coming?

One reason I havent put a release date on the new ones is because its largely in the hands of other suppliers as to when they decide to do their job. A case in point occurred today when one supplier Ive been working with for three months (the one I referred to in an earlier post) advised me they didnt have time to do it anymore. >:( >:( >:( It just emphasizes the value in not naming a date as in all likelihood Id have had to change it three or four times already.

So now its either start this component again with someone else, or scrap the new tamper altogether and stay with the current design (which I must say is an option thats growing in attraction as these frustrations persist...)

    Hi Sinkas,

Thanks for the offer. Its not machining. Id love to say what it is but that may reveal little secrets! :-X I had thought about putting the word out here earlier but decided not to for that reason.

    Thanks for the offer!

Re: Whens the new Pullman coming?

When the womans day were preparing their launch they went on a long advertising campaign, taking out brief ads like "its coming" and "here soon".

This went on for months and created huge interest and intrigue.

Story goes that just weeks before they were about to launch, and having spent thousands on ads, the womens weekly gazumped them and put out an ad stating "its here - at your newsagent now".

And that, is the primary reason why the womens weekly has always been more popular than the womans day.

Just thought Id throw that in while we all wait for the big release! ;)

    Hi All....

Announcing the arrival of the latest member of the CS family..... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Yes, it is a Pullman - but not a tamper.

Gregs wife Mim gave birth to a 8lb 5oz baby boy last night at 10:30 Adelaide time.... Matthew James Pullman has arrived in the world.......

All are doing well, and Greg is enjoying some well deserved sleep - whilst he can...

All the best to Greg, Mim and family.

Re: Whens the new Pullman coming?

Thanks for the well wishes guys, muchly appreciated. Everythings going along nice and smoothly with the new baby, and Im looking forward to at least a week at home.

Now back to the original subject of this thread, the tamper! :)

As most would know there have been some inordinate delays getting this little product onto the shelves. I was ready for the tamper to be produced two months ago, and Id love to be doing all of the manufacturing myself so this could have happened, but until someone bequeathes about half a million to buy all the machinery ::) I have to outsource some of it and endure such delays. These delays have raised various considerations, including abandoning plans to produce the tamper fullstop, but these plans have been strongly discouraged by those who are keen to see the new one, those who have used the early prototypes, and those who have seen the new product preponderantly complete in the metal or in file photographs and appreciate what it has to offer. I also feel I owe something to 1) the people who have invested a fair amount of time giving feedback on all the early prototypes, 2) those in the CS community who have encouraged the work thus far, and 3) myself for the hundreds of hours of designing, turning and converting feedback into physical product, all of which would be wasted if the product never saw the light of day. I am also conscious of the frustrations faced by CSers in the market for a tamper who are remaining tamper-less while they wait just a bit longer in case the new one comes out in time for them.

So with all of the above taken into consideration, I have decided that at this stage :) the new tamper will still be produced, but :( it probably wont be available until next year.

It is a frustrating stand to have to taken given the significant investment of time made earlier in the year to prevent this very situation, but it has been forced by others who unfortunately havent done their job. So under all the circumstances I feel this is the best position to adopt at a time when direction is sought one way or the other and when I have no way of knowing a definite answer myself. Of course things may take a dramatically good turn from here and I will continue to work hard at pushing production along, but eight weeks from Christmas I think a 2007 release is rapidly growing unlikely.

The positive side of this is that development can continue without incurring inordinate costs to get it done at such short notice, as this would have been reflected in the final retail price on the tamper. It also means those considering a purchase can make their decision with this information in mind without wondering if the new tamper might be released this week.

I hope to be able to release further information about the tamper closer to its release, and will do so in this thread.

Thanks for your patience, and stay posted!

    Greg

Its sad to hear that this has happened, but I think that we all respect your no-compromises attitude.

Congrats on the birth of Matthew. Im sure that it wont be too long before he lathes himself up a wooden handled dummy with diameter matching his mouth ;P

Re: Whens the new Pullman coming?

    Hi Sugilun,

Firstly, if its *not* out this year Ill scream! . But heres whats happened in the last few months:

    * In view of the delays, I had time to send a prototype not originally listed for testing out to Epic early December 07 and that gave good feedback, particularly on the improving ergonomics with each round. From some suggestions in that round there are a couple of minor tweaks planned but nothing major.

    * Most suppliers stopped accepting new work for the year in November, and shut down over Christmas which has delayed things further

    * We appear to have gotten past the previous hold-ups with suppliers quoting exorbitant amounts for simple work ("stainless steel please, not platinum!"), so providing our present ones deliver what theyve promised we should be able to move forward in the next couple of months with getting a complete finished product (all prototypes up to now have included non-production components Ive made myself to imitate the real thing).

Once all thats happened and we have a firm release date we will hopefully start releasing a bit of official information about them. The previous delays make me reluctant to put a timeframe on things at this stage as it only takes one hold-up, sick worker, ill grandmother or burnt slice of toast to introduce inordinate delays; but Im guessing at this stage (and dont quote me!) somewhere between April and June or so (a big range but really hard to get any more specific yet). Once Ive got a finished product Ill be in a much better position to give a date Ill be comfortable having some confidence in, plus a few details to give you something to think about!

Re: Whens the new Pullman coming?

    Certainly Sammus,

Were still on track for the timeframe suggested, though probably more the June end of things. All bar one component are ready for production and the final dimensions should be finalised on that in the next few weeks. After then itll just be production and a few final miscellany to prepare it all for release. So Im still hoping for late May / June but it depends on whether there are any more delays.

One bit of information I can now say is that the new tamper is vastly different to look at than the Deluxe tamper and has at least two extra components.

Oh, and theyll definitely see the light of day, somewhere, sometime, before their formal release date ;) And not just on my back verandah either. But as to when, and where :-X

Is that what you were after?

NE1, you take the cake! Andy and I were placing bets (well not really but you know) on who would be the first to pipe up! Keep your eyes on the banners and all will be revealed (bit by bit ;))

There are actually a couple of production-grade units out in the wild now.

Oh OK more detail you say. Specifics will come over the next month or so but as a bit of a teaser heres a few snippets from the review written by the guy who has the first pre-production production-grade unit. This person owns a heap of different tampers, including a few Pullman Deluxe tampers, Torr, Reg Barber, Coffeelab and Thor, so is well qualified to make conclusions relative to other offerings:

When comparing the head design of the Pullman with other tampers, the Pullman felt more secure and comfortable to hold than any of the other tampers.

Taking the tamper for a test run changed my perception that a tamper is simply a well-designed ‘battering ram’. I’ve always found that each of my tampers offers a similar benefit from the base down – a flat surface to compress coffee grounds. Other than fit in the basket, the differing feature for each tamper is the comfort, the feeling you have holding it, and weight. With other tampers, once you start pressing the tamper into the basket, it seems more like a stamping motion. It is hard to describe, but with the Pullman it seems like there is more precision during the tamping motion. Perhaps this is due to the balance of weight and less of a feeling that a heavy base is controlling the tamping motion.

When comparing the overall look of each tamper, the new Pullman looks grand and stands out among the other tampers. At a functional level, the early observation is that the new Pullman is almost flawless in its implementation in terms of weight, balance, comfort, and feel. It’s more than likely to take first place and become my tamper of choice.

    ;)

When comparing the overall look of each tamper, the new Pullman looks grand and stands out among the other tampers. At a functional level, the early observation is that the new Pullman is almost flawless in its implementation in terms of weight, balance, comfort, and feel. *It’s more than likely to take first place and become my tamper of choice.

Re: Whens the new Pullman coming?

Quite possibly. Guess there were lots of different shaped tampers there. Who knows what sorts though.

Oh I get it - you want to give us our heart attacks through anticipation and not through the fact that once they are on the market our heart attacks will be due to the fact that we can no longer make a bad coffee and thus coffee drink ourselves to doom *;)

    Waiting on the edge here.........
