If youre at home and make several cups of coffee over the course of the day then leave it on, as long as you are in the habit of checking that the steam switch is off. *Im in the habit of checking the switches on her every time I go past. If youre going out, or at night, its better to turn her off - the *risk of blowing the element is always there. *

Personally, I have Silvia on a timer, to switch on 30 minutes before my alarm and 30 minutes before I get home, and off as I leave the house and later in the evening and a lot of people here do the same. *Other people will tell you that this is a dangerous practice, in terms of the boiler and electrical risks, and theyre right. *I figure that I have the same risks with my washing machine, and I regularly leave it running.

As Viviane said check the steam wand as they tend to dribble after you turn machine on, they loosen up as the machine cools and the metal contracts. I leave mine on on the weekend when Im home as you never know when a coffee is required. Keep an eye on your tank as well, I top up after every session just to play it safe and get in a good routine.

Single boiler/dual use machines including the Silvia, Piccolo and Perfetta dont have auto refill, whereas the HX and twin boiler machines generally do.

My advice is not to do that, particularly if the machine is unattended.
