    I cant believe that it was something like five years ago that I bought my first Pullman tamper, a very early model that was quite unlike what Greg is even offering now. Ever the thinker, Greg had come up with the idea of having a very long handle that could be gripped in a fist. I mentioned to Greg that I would like a shorter handle and Greg volunteered to make it so. Over the coming years, I ended up with a few more handles and Greg put up with an in-box full of gripes and suggestions. To his credit, rather than dismissing it all as criticism, Greg took it all on board as part of the creative process. Some of the comments and suggestions were kind of stupid, whilst some were taken on board, like my idle note that levelling lines would be cool or Greg Kaans suggestion that a chamfer around the top edge of the base might make it easier to use. The Deluxe evolved and got better, but Greg still kept on soaking up feedback like a sponge, doubtless from many, many more people than just the Victorians. Eventually, Greg decided to start the project that led to the new "barista" tamper, and packages of prototype tampers with many interchangeable parts came into the equation. Along with some of Australias top baristi, I filled in forms only slightly less complicated than the multiple choice on my final year organic chemistry exam, lost the odd part and tamped, tamped, tamped. The packages travelled around, racking up frequent flyer miles, more feedback was collected and more prototypes produced. Pullman the man became Pullman the company, Robin came into the picture and Greg came up with some pretty schmick packaging. I am very sure that Gregs rather amazing amount of research established at least one thing - its impossible to please everyone! The Barista tamper hit the market and Greg offered me a tamper as a thank you. What was a very simple and generous offer then got complicated. We delayed to find out about paint for the engraving, work out which basket I wanted to use, settle on my logo, convert it to vector, etc, etc.

    And then this morning, a package turned up on my doorstep.

    I doubt that this is the end of the story. Im sure that Greg will continue to come up with innovative stuff in the world of tampers -- what, exactly, Ill leave to him to work out. Im already eyeing the acetal handle, an innovation of Gregs that I suspect might actually be the sleeper hit in the world of tampers ...

    Looks like it should never be used but admired, it is a beautiful thing. I received one for christmas and it is now well used and my previous tamper (which I was very happy with) now feels small and unbalanced. The "barista" is a testament to Gregs hard work and dedication to his product. Thanks to luca and all those who helped make a great product.

    Although Luca & others were part of the control group to critique the new design

    I was one of the first 10 to order one when the came up for sale in very limited numbers
    I ordered the convex and from memory only 4 convex tampers were in existence at the time.

    Have loved my Pullman Barista tamper since
    I particularly like the height adjustment as I have big hands

    Thank YOU Luca. Your obsessively objective input over the years has helped make the right refinements in the right areas - and as you said, it helped call the decision to start the Barista project many years back. There really was no way I could morph the Deluxe into a quasi-Barista and hope to achieve the same results. Enjoy the tamper, youve sure earned it! *[smiley=thumbsup.gif]

    I guess it would be remiss not to acknowledge the feedback from many many others in the development of our products, both the Deluxe and the Barista. As Luca mentioned there were many who provided feedback on the Barista prototypes particularly, and while its true its been impossible to please everyone, its been invaluable in coming up with a design that suits the majority and is customisable enough to please the rest, rather than just doing what I thought should be done. Although signing off on a millimetre less here, a few grams less material there or an extra degree of curve over here that you knew was going to upset someone was never going to be an easy process!

    Its also worth a vote of thanks to those like KK who ordered the first round of Baristas and patiently waited for them to be delivered. Those who have long memories will remember there were some delays in the process which was actually due to a toolmaker messing up a very minor adjustment of the die for the rubber part such that the whole die had to be thrown away and started from scratch. The delay was*most unfortunate, incredibly frustrating, utterly unforeseeable but entirely out of my control. A few remarkably suggested Id turned my attention to other projects instead of getting the tampers out the door but thankfully the overwhelming majority (including KK) took the reason at face value and were sympathetic to the delays, so thanks!!

    The feedback sponge is probably a bit fuller than it was a few years ago, but as always Im / were always keen to get feedback about how our products and/or service can be improved. I believe theres always room for improvement, but sometimes it takes others to explain where that improvement can be done. Thats the value of customer feedback. Keep it coming guys!
