She just doesnt get it - Tampers

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Just a couple of days ago upgraded to the Rancilio Silvia, super excited and happy with the shots made and of course they could be better!

The tamper that came with the silvia is soooo crappy, wife told me to get it replaced by rancilio? What? Told her that wasnt possible, is it possible? anyone?

Told her I wanted a Pullman Tamper and it cost $100, she total freaked out and said do I really need to get something so expensive?

Ive been looking around and most range about $50 to $75 depending if they are aluminium or Stainless Steel. The most budget one I can find are the full silver ones that go for about $25 from most sponsors that has a slight convex.

Most here probably have a Pullman, and I would probably get one down the track when I win lotto or something jk :P
Would any of you CS recommend a noob CS a half decent and affordable tamper.

Hope Im not asking for too much!

    Poohjay

P.s: Anyone from Pullman Tamper reading this, when are you going to do a little financial crisis sale so we all can get a decent tamper ;D

The SS one from Coffee Parts is nice.
Not as expensive as a Pullman but not fitted either.
They weigh over 1/2kg and feel very nice and the weight seems to make tamping feel easier.

Anything will be better than the plastic job you get with ones machine
And it does not matter if the machine costs over 3K you still get the same plastic tamper

I am sure most sponsors will stock a rattle-ware tamper at a very reasonable price

Or you can put in an add in the wanted section of the forum and if someone has a spare one they want to part with

I am sure you will find one

They probably would replace it - with another plastic one!

Have you tried the vendor you bought the Silvia from? They might do a deal on a better tamper.

On a budget another vote for the Rattleware, I had one for my old machine, good quality stainless base and well weighted handle it was *good fit to the baskets I had too.

That being said I am currently waiting on a custom Pullman (should be in the mail by now I hope :) ). edit just got an email from Gregg it has left 8-)
Best solution is these cases is sell the SO to fund the desired device what ever it may be ;D

Thanks for the ideas! Actually bought my Silvia from CoffeeParts as they were doing the machine for fairly cheap -$689 and the lady on the phone was pretty nice about reserving me one.

My dilemma is if I spend $50-$60 for some a rattle-ware or something similiar its getting very close to the price of a Pullman.

Need to wear the wife down with the justifications & nagging ;D

    wish me luck!

Not sure where you are located but here in Brisbane Di Bella sell decent quality stainless steel tampers in various sizes... mine cost around $25 and it does the trick very nicely for my little setup. Worth a trip... and pick up some green beans or roasted while youre there.

While not wanting to rubbish a product unsighted if they are the same Tampers that Di Bella had in Melbourne then they were not very comfortable in my hands anyway. The Handles were skinny and to tall.

I had a laugh. Totally sympathise with you mate. I also would love to buy a new tamper. I ended up buying the cheap stainless steel evilbay $25 job and I have learned to use it. Would I buy the cheap one again in hindsight? Nope, but I pick my battles and at the time I was justifying the new espresso machine!

Used a mates pullman and it is a lovely piece of art. Definitely on my birthday list.

    All the best!

    Hi Poohjay

The Pullmans are a nice bit of kit - no doubt about it. I have a deluxe and barista model that were two of few items that survived a fire and the restorers! I happen to prefer using my old deluxe model, particularly when busy, as it has a little more breathing room than my barista model which I find seems to catch on the side of the baskets readily (and yes, the baskets came with the tamper). I also have a personal preference for the bottom weight of the deluxe.

IMHO, the rattleware tamper is great value. Not as easy on the eye, but more than adequate.

And if youre looking for something with a price range in between, and remarkably similar to the barista, the Coffeelab tampers are well worth considering.

my pullman tamper is being made now i hope, i just tryed a large amount of tamps in the shop and found nothing under $65 that went close to fitting the 58buckets in the silvia, so there was only one option. getting the tamp and bucket made to fit from pullman

You can have my rosewood tamper if youre keen – I got my pullman today. The rosewood is pretty fine as far as Im concerned, but the pullman is fit to the basket which is extra nice, and makes it a lot easier for me to get a level tamp (I can prove all sorts of things about parallel lines, but actually telling if something is without help? Yeah, way out of my league).

    PM me if youre interested.

Ha! :D As soon as the smelters drop the price of stainless steel and our suppliers are prepared to work for peanuts! Unfortunately making a Pullman Tamper here in Australia is a pretty manual and expensive process, its not just a matter of pushing a button in China to turn out a million for a dollar each and pay the worker $1 per hour; and to get good workmanship we have to pay good money.

It can be hard to justify that much on a tamper purely from showing SWMBO just a photo; but I almost guarantee shell start to appreciate the difference if she can pick one up and hold one. From a photo there may not appear to be a big difference between one of ours and tampers from some other manufacturers, but on closer inspection the workmanship, the size and the finish should speak for themselves. Materials can differ markedly too, so in 10 years time the Pullman will be still as good as new (barring marks from normal use) where others may be rusting, chipping, corroding or showing various other forms of decay.

Its more expensive to do it properly and the benefits arent always apparent when its sitting there shinily on the shelf, so many choose to take the cheaper path and bigger profits; but down the track it becomes obvious why we choose the higher quality path. For example:

    Pullman (L)

I havent identified who makes these other tampers because Im not interested in pulling down others who still make a good product in their own right; but simply to point out there ARE differences with a Pullman and the reasons why we do things the way we do. I should mention though that these alternative units arent the $25 cheapies - theyre amongst the most popular high-end tampers in the world in the $70+ range.

Compared to a real cheapie? I guess this is one way of looking at it. A $5 hammer from the reject shop and a $200 unit from a premium tool shop will both knock nails into wood, but the cheap one wont be as comfortable, well-balanced or as nice to use as the expensive one. Down the track the handle will split, the head will work loose and within a few years itll end up in the bin and youll shell out for another one. It will take many many years of cheap hammers before you recover the cost of the expensive one, if ever you do, but each time you use that expensive one youll appreciate what a well-made tool it is, it will be a joy to use and the job will be that much simpler and smoother to accomplish.

Whether those things are important to you you have to answer for yourself; but if you get the opportunity please try to physically handle one of our tampers if you can and a lot of this should suddenly become clearer. A number of sponsors sell our tampers and would be more than happy to assist in this regard - the full list of resellers can be found at http://www.coffeetamper.com.au/resellers.html if youd like to find a local.

    Good luck!
    Greg

That may be so Mr. Pullman, but at my $0 price Ill sell BILLIONS. BWAHAHAHA.

More seriously, I put my word behind Pullman tampers. I havent tried others admittedly, but I cant imagine any improvements beyond aesthetic, and at that stage its a personal choice. So for those with a bit of cash burning in their pocket, go for it.

    Thanks again Greg.

Just to back up Gregs example, I still have some of my fathers tools.
I even have his electric drill which must be over 30 years old now.
Ive gone through 2 cordless ones myself and he used to be a builder so it got a lot of use before I inherited it.

Re: She just doesnt get it - Tampers

Ill certainly back up what Greg says above,

I tried a range of tampers before finding Gregs and one of those cost me $45.00, not that cheap really but after buying my first Pullman Tamper, the others were stashed away somewhere (I cant remember where exactly ;)) and Ive never used anything else since. That was quite a few years ago and that Tamper still looks great and works as designed... My eldest son is using it with his hardware now and is as equally impressed with it as I first was.

Im not knocking the RB and CL tampers out there, I havent used their designs so am unable to comment. In any event, I would always try to buy genuine Aussie designed and made products before something from overseas, so long as the quality was on a par but from my research at the time, the Pullmans were an easy step up in quality compared to others I could locate at the time, so thats where my money went. I have never regretted it.... 8-)

Greg: enuff said, you had me at Ha! Hope to get a Pullman by xmas this year, pingusam has kindly sent me his rosewood handle one so at least I can tamper better than the plastic crap that came with the silvia.

The wife went to Simon Johnson for lunch yesterday and they were selling tampers for $130, I told her I could get a much better one for $100! I think Im wearing her down slowly, making her realize that a Pullman isnt actually *that* expensive :D

    Quote from said article:
    Tamp not a factor

One thing that putting as much coffee in as possible did was to remove the effects of tamping as a factor in the shot quality. A light “smoothing” tamp to remove voids and ensure good edge contact with the filter basket was just as effective (or not) as the heaviest “grunt” tamp I could manage. To prove to myself that this situation wasn’t exclusive to the Silvia, I tried the same thing out on a 1-group La Marzocco and got the same results.

That was for one extreme circumstance where the basket was filled to the absolute limit before any more coffee caused leaks.

I also had the stainless one ur talking about RB creams it too- the fit it fantastic, and I fnd the flat base it better too!!

Come down to budget, but also hey look its nice to have... But there surley is more to life!! :o
