    Synesso vs Silvia double basket

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I know this issue has arisen in various threads, but can anyone link me to some quantitative info which compares the Synesso double to the Silvia V3? I find the Silvia is perfect for a double cap, but I need a basket that holds more coffee for a flat white, something between a double and a triple. Is my memory correct that I read somewhere the Synesso holds more coffee?

Here is the Double basket from the Rancilio Lucy (2004 vintage from memory) next to a Synesso basket I got with my Pullman tamper.

I havent weighed the difference in coffee but it certainly looks bigger and doesnt fit in the earlier model domestic group handles, but I bought a commercial group handle and it fitted in that but touched the bottom of it, eventually wearing off the chrome in a ring around the inside bottom.

Thanks trentski; it certainly looks bigger, but the ridging on the Synesso looks like it could have a smaller circumference which makes the overall volume the same as for the Silvia. Hmm...

Ill double check when I get home if I still have it, I could have it confused with the one I got with my naked handle, pretty sure its a Synesso and not a LM though :-/

Frankly, all you need do is buy a regular commercial Oz market double filter. It holds around 2 grams more than the std Silvia Italian market filter and makes much nicer coffee when using the type of good quality arabicas used in this market.

Those straight sided angular things as depicted in the photo can be troublesome as in, because of their depth they can hit bottom and therefore dont sit properly in some commercial group handles. The std commercial Oz market ones used in most commercial machines here dont hit bottom & work a treat.

Here is the Synesso double (left) next to the Silvia double (right) from a V3 Silvia:

    Synesso top Silvia bottom here:

The Synesso triple is bigger again and fouls on the bottom of the portafilter, i tested it at the shop.

Cut the bottom off the portafilter. Go naked and even the deepest baskets fit.

    Or use smaller cups!

I can answer my own question now; just bought a Synesso double and had my first shot. No doubt that it holds more coffee, but I cant quantify it. At a purely subjective level, it has given me an extra quarter to a third of flavour depth so I have the result I wanted. I can now have a longer cap (from 160ml to about 200ml) in the morning when Im thirsty without diluting strength. Also got a Sivlia naked portafilter which comes with a Silvia triple basket so I have even more options to try. Have not used it yet; wanted to only change one variable at a time as Im still on a steep learning curve.

It might be more like making the moment last just a few sips longer while my teenagers squable their way out of the house. Any excuse to linger.

Now we are talking. I drink a 160mL cup for my coffee with a single shot from a Lelit. I kind of wish I could get a slightly larger double basket for me and the Mrs each morning. Unfortunately, I dont think its entirely possible on the Lelit (57mm baskets) >:(
