    Puck sticks to screen

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I have a strange problem.* My coffee pucks occasionally stick to the group head instead of the filter.* Have to scrape them off and clean it.* Usually it is very full of grounds even if the puck seems to have stuck to the filter.* I always rinse , wipe, wipe the group head and put the pf on it and run some water through it.* Then remove and wipe filter again.* Seems to be necessary to get the head clean.* I have a Gaggia Espresso with a single shot filter.

You are probably over dosing you should just get an impression of the shower screen screw on the puck and feel no resistance on inserting the PF

No, that/s not it. I have seen this when there is no impression on the puck and Im pretty sure there is clearance to the shower. I even thought the puck was floating. Sometimes when I take off the portafilter, the puck is floating in a pool of water.

I think its the complete opposite.
I think you maybe UNDER-dosing, try the 5cent coin test and see how much clearance you are leaving.
I find that with a very low dose, the puck is often soggy, and sticking to the top of the shower screen.

As a result of having to grind too fine to compensate for excessively under-dosing.... ;)

Hi Mal, I think you are dead on! i have found I do need to grind the bean quite fine but I am clearly not dosing enough. I normally just have a bit of a peak but it isn't full. Will try again with correct dosing and see if I still have this problem.

    Cheers,

    Welcome WD...

An ideal dose is one that after being tamped, clears the shower-screen by 2-3mm.
A lot of people just sit a $0.05 to $0.10 coin on top of the puck after tamping, lock the Group Handle in, remove it and observe whether the coin has been crushed into the puck - If it has, reduce the dose by a gram or two, if not, increase the dose by a similar margin until such time as the coin barely kisses the shower-screen; this will be close to an ideal dose.

After that, adjust the grind setting one way or the other in order to achieve the 30/60ml volume of espresso in the cup in ~30 seconds for a Single/Double shot. The one thing to be consistent with after achieving this, is to ensure that the coffee is always distributed evenly throughout the basket, otherwise you will experience uneven extraction and perhaps even high pressure jets of coffee squirting all over the place, if you're using a naked Group Handle... Practice makes perfect...

I don't think I've ever had issues with coffee sticking to the screen. The first sign of an overfilled basket is that it is hard to get the portafilter on as it presses the puck against the screen as you put the portafilter on the machine.

I find few problems at the moment with the basket I am using just filling it and leveling with my finger then tamping but then it will vary with the basket design. A different basket can be an idea too.
