    Last Carezza in Vic?!

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I now own a Gaggia Carezza, and I gotta say how happy I am about it! The PF weighs a ton! So good! I paid $310 which I think is a fair price. I have not read a bad review about the quality of the coffee this machine produces. Once I get the grinder I will have a wicked home setup for about $550! Nice.

I also believe this was one of the LAST Carezzas available new in Melbourne.... I checked with the importer and they are not importing them anymore. Myer and DJ havnt had them for 6mths, and I phoned EVERY Harvey Norman store.

I phoned about 5 Good Guys, and found 2 left at Airport West. There is ONE left, and if you are thinking about getting a low end machine... run the hell over there and buy this one!!! Value for money is second to none!

I also wanted to bitch about Gaggia replacing the Carezza with the Cubika - (Carezza $349, Cubika $359) A company that was making an excellent entry level machine decided to replace the plastic body machine with a stainless body machine.... and replace the brass PF with an alloy PF??? WTF?

This just goes to show you that mostly people are lame, and that looks are more important than the quality of the product itself.

Ambivalent feelings there. :-/ Good Guys Airport West was where my wife and daughter bought my Carezza (dont own anymore) as a present for me 3 years ago. Thats what got me hooked on espresso in the first place.

Sad part is no Carezzas. Theyre a very nice machine for the price. Shots are as good as Silvias IMO.

Saw one in Chadstone Myers for $279 last weekend. Yeah, the lady selling the Gaggias at Myer Melb works for Shriro and admits the Cubika is lame vs the other Gaggias.

Warren, could you repeat that last statement? :o

Hiya Greg! Tied the knot yet? ;D

No problem repeating the afore-mentioned statement. Shots on the Silvia are about the same as the shots on the Carezza were.

When it all boils down. Both machines are sporting 58mm P/Fs thus holding the same amount of coffee. Biggest difference Im starting to learn (finally) is the freshness of ingredients. The main reason in upgrading was more the fact that the Silvia should be around for the longer haul.

Hey Greg! Ive got a lot to thank this forum for. Roasting ones own beans has made the "biggest" improvement in my shots so far IMO.

BTW to appeal to your eye for a bargain I managed to pick up some pretty solid looking Cafe Kimbo espresso cups from my continental grocer the other day for the princely sum of $1.99 each, saucer included. They were in the bargain bin up the front. The good thing is I didnt have to buy the crappy Kimbo coffee with them.

Weight of cup is 150g. :P

    Hey Warren,
    Yep, all knotted up :D

You forgot to add that the Sylvia steams like a nuclear power plant compared to any Gaggia.

Your side of town seem to produce more bargains in the espresso cup area. Then again, short_black on CG had one of his students do a study which suggested thinwalled cups was better than thickwallled ones. :P

I agree that Coffee Kimbo is TRULY crappy.

All knotted up and doing it even more on the cheap? Youre going to have to sell off a few hundred of your Gaggias. :P

Yep, Northern suburbs has a proliferation of a) Vietnamese $2 shops and b) Italian Grocery stores/market stalls and c) Middle-Eastern nut and spice shops.

Cup bargains to be had by one and all. OTOH most coffee roasters/retailers suck big time. Hence the swing to home-roasting.

Its amazing how many Italian-Australians will drink 5 year old Coffee-Mio, Coffex et al beans in 1kg, $10 bags. :-/

Well, Coffee Mio and Coffex are locally roasted so at least they have a chance of being sort of fresh.

    Me, sell one of my 5 & 1/2 Gaggias ??? ??? :-X

    Greg,

Ive had Coffex "fresh" (well at least thats what they told me). Still a shocker IMO. :-X

That aside most Coffex seems to be the one always sitting on the supermarket shelf and greatly reduced prices. Only way people will buy the stuff. Yuck!

Half a Gaggia. I trust you euthanised some of the innards? Did the boiler disinegrate? :P

I bought some Coffex from a place that uses it when I was desperate and it seemed fresh enough - loads of crema. I concur on the taste, though - it wasnt real flash.

I bought the 1/2 Gaggia as project bits from someone in WA who had a problem with boiler corrosion. It actually wasnt that bad and most of the stuff that was causing the problems was scale - I think Perth water is pretty well loaded with minerals. Getting the dispersion disk off the grouphead required major brute force but it all cleaned up nicely. Now to get back to the project...

    IRT your cups

When I was in France I did a Café crawl with my brother and during this time I collected cups from the Cafés and whren I returned to Aust I brought back 2.5kg of ceramic, started to become a bit of an obsession... but Im just hanging out from sokem of those Illy Cups.. Now theyre very nice.

    IRT which cups are best.
Wouldnt the thicker walled ones be best, If theyre left on top of your machine being kept warm they would retain the heat and thus keep your shots warmer.....

Anyone interested in getting some of the Illy cups?... Theyre expensive

    FB,

Personally havent noticed any difference between thicker and thinner-walled cups. Just prefer thicker ones because they have more of a feel of quality about them and seem less likely to break easily. Im pretty good at dropping the flaming things. ;)

As far as Illy cups go. Think Ill pass on that. As much as I reckon they look fantastic (particularly like the nudes). I just think that $150+ :o for six cups is a helluva lota moolah. Make a great object dart but theyre just something you could almost guarantee one of your kids would drop. :o

Too right Warren, we have four ranging from 17-3.5 (the youngest being the wifes mid life crisis...I had a laugh not really) I too like the thicker ones and agree they have a feel of quality......

The Illy cups... Ive ordered 6 for christmas and I think Santa the old sod might grant my wish.. but they will be for display and use on special occasions... maybe when the kids leave home...I had a laugh

Would love to get a hold of the flying Saucer set, but havnt seen them for ages.... as for the nudes... havnt seen them, Have you got a link to where we might see them?

    Cheers

FB Do you mean the Illy Alien Cups?

I reckon theyre about the coolest looking cups Ive ever seen. If they were available Id be seriously thinking about them (despite the money). They are the epitome of conversation pieces. ;D

Are these the ones you mean?

IIRC They were designes by David Byrne from Talking Heads.

(Bit of trivia for the music fans) ;D
