Smile All opinions welcomed on a new machine decision

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hello all,

Not sure if I have the correct section here but................

I would like to buy a new espresso machine. I don't want to make a mistake getting one and then wish that I had got a better quality machine, have to resell at a loss and buy another dearer one. We did have a cheap brand which made very average to undrinkable coffee but I have ditched that. At the moment I have a Stovetop which makes a reasonable enough drink but as would be expected, not up to a good espresso standard.

Having spent some time looking and reading the valuable advice on here, a few brands stand out as the best choice.

For example, if I were to choose an ECM machine I have a question.

Could I regret getting a basic single boiler ECM machine, (CASA IV or Classika II) and wish sometime in the future that I had got a heat exchanger machine (Technika IV or Mechanika IV) or dual boiler machine (Synchronika)? A Controvento is a bit expensive. I would just like to be able to make a good coffee at home.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi LFM60... think about how many milk based coffees you make at a time and if you regularly have friends over wanting milky coffees.

If yes, you love milky coffee, and you don't want to wait around a long'ish amount of time to make it then you should consider a HX (Heat Exchanger) machine or dual boiler machine.

If no, and you're the only one drinking espresso in the house you could get away with a nice single boiler E61 machine or try your hand a La Pavoni Professional lever style machine.

Or forget expensive (that's all relative) machines, buy yourself a grinder and start out with an aeropress or TrinityOne or a Brazen brewer from Bean Bay here.

Either way, if you're not in a rush, take your time and pop in to one of the site sponsors near you and check out some machines while enjoying a chat and some coffee. :-)

    Thanks Matth3wh for your reply.

I'd usually make 2 at a time, probably twice a day. Occasionally just one when I'm home by myself.
If friends come over, then about 4 or 5 at the most at one time.

I'll have a look at the options you've suggested.

I will be taking my time to get the decision right, so agree that a trip to a site sponsor for a coffee or three will be necessary.
We are in Brisbane and I've seen a sponsor on the Gold Coast that needs a visit

I have the grinder already so I would hope to spend no more than 3K but you know how it is when you enter a coffee shop with shiny new machines and the aroma...............

    The budget is not definite.

I think that is in about in the Mechanika IV price range.

That's a big opening. Generally a single boiler is a stepping stone and most end up with a quality HX. I think skipping to an HX is the way to go. Look in the mid to high $2ks to get a great machine. That's my opinion but there will be many more.
Please take a look at my buyers guide. www.kbean.com.au/buyers-guide
    Thanks, Paul
Thank you Paul for your advice and the buyers guide link. I'll look at it next after this.

Having already owned a less than satisfactory cheap espresso machine (before finding this forum) I don't want a stepping stone this time. I agree that going straight to a quality HX is a good move.

This next one needs to be a well researched purchase for the long term.
