What tamper to buy (upto $50)

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Hi guys, I'm chasing a better tamper than the stock standard I have for my Sb 6910(will upgrade machine eventually!) that being said I don't want to fork out a huge amount for a tamper I won't end up keeping forever as once I upgrade machines I will eventually want a tamper to fit the size basket closer to size. Currently just running the stock standard double baskets that come with the 6910,that being said in in the market looking at new baskets for it, and unsure which to get and which fit! Being the machine is a 58mm ports filter, would I be safe to say that a 58.3 or 58.4 mm tamper be an ideal happy medium for the standard baskets and also upgrade baskets when I eventually get 1 or 2? Thanks alot! Feel free to send a pm through

The Cafelat tamper range is pretty good value. I have the aluminium 'drop' tamper which might be just over $50 and has a nice solid feel and good clean looks. If you want to try something a bit different, you could try the Matt Perger lightweight plastic tamper. I'd stick with a standard sized tamper until you decide to spend hundreds on something like a matched Pullman base and basket. Personally, I don't think having a more perfectly matched tamper would make any difference at all to my coffee, though I won't completely discount that it could make a difference for others.

Personally id buy a new basket now and a tamper that fits it well or you may end up buying another tamper again soon. A quality basket like a Pesado, Pullman or VST arent that expense $30-45 and the last two are guaranteed for size so you know if you buy extra later they should be the same fit for your tamper.

if your around Sydney maybe have a look at CoffeeParts

Yep a 58.4 to 58.5mm fits them well. Keep in mind Pesado don’t guarantee there width so you may be one that tight or larger then you wanted for you tamper. I’ve had three and two where great one a bit larger but I’m picky. For the price they were great. My Pullman is my daily got to as fits my Pullman bigstep perfectly and I like the dose size it holds / taste if gives but that tiny amounts I’m talking about. Get more variance on taste from different coffees/roast level.

sent you a PM about a few other options. Remember the tamper is your tool of trade and a tradesman is only as good as his tools hahaha well that how I sold it!!

Handle vs handle-less tamper? I've just seen rhinowares has a handle less 58.5mm tamper. Is it worth the extra $20 over the handle rhinowares tamper to buy? Obviously you don't have to use your wrist motion for this, and it's also adjustable for depth too. Just thought I'd throw it out there before I purchase a tamper. Also looking at a Pesado basket vs a pullman basket. What's the main difference? Both are almost identical price(pesado being $2 cheaper)

Pesado baskets are made in the same factory as IMS. In fact I think they actually have ĎPesado by IMSí stamped on them. Pullman are possibly the same. Iíve got an IMS basket and theyíre great. I admit they probably donít deliver the top notch results that VST baskets are capable of, but theyíre more forgiving and are perfectly adequate unless youíre really into espresso.
Iíve got a black Barista Hustle tamper and I love it. I think itís about your price range as well, but I actually bought mine on eBay so could be worth looking there as well.

I own four tampers: an "Ace" (my first before I joined CS from a guy in Qld who was making them at the time), two Pullman tampers (a flat and a convex) and a Rattleware one I bought for $20 about 5 years ago. Guess which one I use.
Answer: the Rattleware one, for no other reason that I get consistently good results from it that I haven't bothered using any of the others.

Well will most likely just go pesado baskets as slightly cheaper and seem the same. Just unsure on tamper I want to go yet. Wasn't sure about these flat handle less push type ones or just get an original handle one that I like
