Budget priced PreciseFit tamper for VST baskets

Thought it worth mentioning that if you're looking for a budget priced alternative to the expensive precision fit tampers for the VST baskets, the $70, 58.7mm PreciseFit Tamper from Site Sponsor Jetblack Espresso may work for you - https://www.jetblackespresso.com.au/...coffee-tamper/ - (Select size and Flat/Convex)

The Pullman Big Step 58.55mm tamper is often listed as ideal for the VST baskets. This is only a 0.15mm difference when compared to the PreciseFit 58.7mm. Different brands and even sizes of "58mm" baskets have slight variances with internal dimensions and different size tampers suit some better than others. Over time I've ended up with 58mm, 58.55mm and 58.7mm tampers so can experiment a little.

I've tried each size on a 15g Ridged VST and a 18g Ridgeless VST. The Precisefit 58.7mm is a closer fit in both but attention needs to be paid to keep it level, especially with the 15g as it can bind a little if the tamper isn't kept level. Backing it out gently and re-levelling usually works. With the 18g VST ridgeless, the Precisefit feels like it was matched especially to this basket. Slight manufacturing tolerence variations such as those between my 15g and 18g VST baskets occurr but it may just be a case of ridged v ridgeless. Anyway, for my 18g ridgeless VST I prefer using the 58.7mm PreciseFit (Convex base). I suppose different batches of these tampers could have minute variances but if so, hopefully not enough to cause any issues.

I recently picked up a Chinese knock-off of the Barista Hustle tamper for under $20 delivered, after finding out the genuine articles had gone out of production. The handle part seems to be made of aluminium instead of plastic. It's listed as "58mm" but seems to catch more grinds at the edge of my 18g VST basket than my matched Pullman Barista. The first one had a slightly rough machine finish on the bottom surface, but other than retaining some fines after tamping wasn't affecting the pour in a bad way. After spending 10s with 300 grit sandpaper and 30s with 1200 grit she's smooth as can be. Gave that to my brother and ordered two more just in case they disappear. I'm curious if Pullman still make replacement bases, and if they'll fit.

Barista Hustle gear is available again. It’s manufacture, sale and distribution is now being handled by Fellow so there won’t be any long ‘out of stock’ periods any more. Considering how reasonably priced they are I’d stick with the genuine items and avoid the counterfeit ones.

I wasn't aware they were back, good to hear. Once the spare bases are in stock again I'll grab one.

Recently tried the 58.7mm PreciseFit Tamper in a Ridgeless 15g VST which it fitted perfectly just like the 18g Ridgeless I have. Also tried it on a 20g Ridgeless VST I just received and it won't even get past the lip. The Pullman Big Step 58.55mm fits the 20g with only the slightest of play. The 58.55mm Big Step fits perfectly into a La Marzocco Ridged 17g which the Precisefit snags on.

If you're after a one tamper suits all then 58.5mm or there abouts is often quoted as the precision fit tamper size to use and is the sensible choice. Due to manufacturing tolerances on baskets and tampers, chasing a "blueprinted" minimum functional fit is more like a matter of luck as well as a bit obsessive compulsive. I got lucky with what I had on hand and my 58.7mm Precisefit fits my 15g and 18g Ridgeless VST baskets with a much better feel than other basket and tamper combinations I have on hand. Different manufacturing batches of either may not work as well or at all.

Tried the 58.7mm PreciseFit Tamper in a Ridgeless 22g VST (from CSer swap, thanks Steve!) which it fit perfectly, just like the 15g and 18g ones I have on hand. 20g VST the odd one out, maybe from a batch on the smaller ID side of manufacturing tolerance. Only talking 0.1 to 0.15mm which is SFA. Still good for a 58.5 or 58.55mm tamper.
