Just curious: while you were using your old basket, what made you think it needed replacing? Inconsistent pours, channeling, specific taste defects?
After many years of use I had a feeling my Espresso Parts 18 gram basket was getting a little tired, so shouted myself a new one.
The difference was instant and quite remarkable, vast improvement of flavour, viscosity, crema and mouth feel, interestingly I had to open the grinder a couple of notches to get the result I was looking for.
If your feeling your shots are not quite what they used to be, and your basket has had a lot of use, could be well worth looking at a new one.![]()

In a cafe baskets have a lifespan of around 12 months.
Interesting. I wouldn’t have thought a basket would wear out in domestic use? Have you tried going back to the old to confirm ?
I guess if at the edges of the holes the metal is very thin then with time it could be abraded and create a bigger hole.
Cheers
No, haven't gone back to the old basket, the improvement was immediate and quite dramatic, the fact that I had to open the burrs a couple of graduations to achieve my usual extraction indicated there was quite a change.
Bear in mind the basket has been in constant use for about 9 years, that's approaching 10000 shots.
The only visual sign of any change was the old basket had a noticeable degree of bulge on the base.![]()
