    Bottomless portafilter

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hello all,
Since starting in on making my own espresso, I have read much about the benefits of having a bottomless portafilter in order to fine tune the extraction process. I dont have a spare portafilter for my machine, but am tempted to do a little surgery on the one I have. What I was wondering was whether a bottomless portafilter can be used all the time (once I hack up the one I have, then that would be it), or are there downsides to this?

You can certainly use a bottomless all the time, however the downside is you lose the double spout. If you want to make 2 coffees at once with a bottomless PF, then things get difficult.

The other thing that will likely change a bit is your tamping process. You are changing the target a little, so your procedure will change a little too.

Thanks fatboy, didnt think about the 2 cup option. Though most of the time Im making just for myself or Im making for visitors who like their coffee in mugs. Think Ill bite the bullet and go for it. Cheers!

Something Ive done since I got mine if two cups are needed is to pull the shot into a measuring shot glass and then just divide into the two target cups. Not ideal if youre going to be doing latte art but if not its a way around it.

Thanks Greg, thats a good thing to remember. However, what Ive ended up doing, is to saw off the bottom of the pf. This doesnt ruin the spouts like a lot of other methods. So what I am hoping, is that if I ever need to have the two spout option, then I can virtually just reattach it again. Though not too sure concerning the details of that bit yet (maybe even a bit of tape would do for the short term), and maybe I never will have the need but at least the option is there.

Used the naked pf last night for the first time. Amazing to watch! I even had my leveling etc done correctly as the espresso came out of all the holes at once and then centered in one tiger stripe column. Probably beginners luck but I sure was chuffed about it. Cheers!

Its the Breville BES200, only an el cheapo. Thats why it didnt worry me doing the mod. If I stuffed it up then it would be, "Oh shucks, looks like Ill have to upgrade" *;). Even though the machine is pretty low on the espresso making machine list, its still really nifty being able to watch as the espresso is extracted.

hey greg i find now it almost as quick (and definately tastier) to forget the 2 cup at once, and just pulll 1 shot after the other... full flavour, adds an extra 40sec to the process...
