    rechroming advice needed

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi,

I want to rechrome a couple of portafilters off my pavoni. They have little wear, but have been treated very rough by the past owner with little dents all over. There are a few things I am thinking about:

    1. Will it just be cheaper to buy some new portafilters?
    2. Is there any issues with food safety - I really dont like the thought I poisoning myself! Can I just go to any chromer, or do they need to advertise food safety? I was thinking I could just rechrome the outside, and then I dont need to think about food safety?

Any suggestions? I am in SE suburbs of melb if anyone recommends somewhere to rechrome around here.

    Thanks,

    Damian.

It will cost less to purchase a new PF

    but I remember someone getting
Modern Plating at 4-6 King St Oakleigh VIC 3166
Sent his car parts for chrome work

Dont ask me anymore as I live in QLD

If its just the inside, I wouldnt bother. Theres a school of thought that you should strip all the chrome out of the inside of your PF, anyway.

yeah the inside is down to brass which I dont mind. it is the outside that is in a bad way. *It will need a good sanding to smooth it out (lots of dents in the brass) and then recroming.

Thanks for the address KK, I might give them a call and discuss it.

If anyone else has info on food safety of recroming or other recommendations that would be great.

    Thanks,

    Damian.

Here is a pic just to show what they are like. you would have to think that maybe there was a sharp edge on the grinder, or they used to tap it on something sharp to settle the coffee?

    Hi
With all those little dints unless the chrome is quite thick they may still show up. Buy a new portfilter.

Just had a look at coffee parts (just body no handle for pavoni)
    Part Number: 700882
Part Name: filter holder body short m12 3/8
    Price (AUD): $ 62.00

Just to give you a cost comparison

yeah hi Mike, I would love to buy some new ones, but the machine needs a fair bit of work so I am trying to keep my costs down if I can. I am thinking I could remove the dents by sanding, so then I wouldnt have thought it would matter how thick the rechrome is?

Thanks KK I saw those there. If rechroming is no option I will be getting a couple - then I will probably make myself a bottomless PF with the old ones just for curiosity as ive never used one of these before.

    Behmor Brazen - $249 - Free Freight
    Hi Damien
Well making one of them into a bottomless PF is the goer!
Option 1: Rechrome two dinged ones then later buying a bottomless PF for practice. Have a look at how much they are.
    or
Option 2: Making two dinged ones into bottomless (zero cost), on-sell one of the bottomless ones, and buy a nice shiny new one PF :-)
