Cleaning the Group on a Rancilio Lucy

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hello Everyone,

Thanks for a great site - extremely informative and of huge assistance in learning about coffee and selecting a machine.

I have just purchased a Rancilio Lucy (the Silvia/Rocky combo unit) and am very happy with it. Great coffee (and getting better all the time) and improving my milk steaming skills as well.

I do have a question regarding cleaning the group head which I hope I can get help on.

After I pull a shot and remove the portafilter, there are small amounts of ground coffee in the groove where the portafilter locks on to the group. I clean this with a damp cloth after every pull then clean the shower head. Is this coffee in the groove normal? There isnt a huge amount of it and it isnt affecting the coffee in any way. The puck is dry and hard and comes out easily. Im assuming that the shower head doesnt completely cover the coffee and there is a little leakage in to the PF groove.

I dont mean to be paranoid - just want to make sure the machine is working properly.

    Thanks in advance!

Yes, those grounds in the groove are unfortunately normal -- not just in electric coffee machines, but stove tops etc. If they make their way onto the seal and are not thoroughly cleaned off, each time you lock on the portafilter the hardened grounds will grind into the seal, eventually rendering it useless. Always a good idea to wipe off any fresh grounds from the lip of the basket before locking on the portafilter.

Every day or so, get a damp cloth, pack it into the groove and remove the grounds. Every so often, its worth unplugging the machine, removing the water tank, and turning it upside down so you can see what youre doing around the group as you clean away.
