Using double filter basket for single shot?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Is there any downside with using a double filter basket, but only filling it with a single shot of ground coffee?

The reason is I just got a new de-pressurised filter basket but its only a double, and I sometimes like to have single shots.

I think youll find that itll gush. You may be able to grind it very fine to partially compensate, but it wont be optimum. Alternatively, you could just drink doppio ristrettos :) or burn half a shot down the drain :-[

the second that a few drops of water hit the puck, the puck will expand. If theres enough coffee in the basket the coffee will expand only a fraction (as there wont be much room to expand), allowing for a smooth and even extraction. If however, the group is only half full, when the first few drops of water hit it, the coffee will expand all over the place and water will gush through it.
As smokey said, you could probably take the grind considerably finer to try and mitigate this, but youll be left with a coffee with no where near as much complexity, not to mention a big goopy mess in the group.

You could always make a coffee for someone else - if available. Or put the second shot into the fridge for an ice coffee (Mmmmm).

Its a Breville Ikon (BES400). The place where I brought the de-pressurised basket only had double baskets in stock which is why I only have a double basket. I think ill have to order in a single basket :D

Basically if you want good coffee,... No.
There was a good explanation why a post or two back.
You can either pour a ristretto, a bit sweeter usually, or let one side run into the drain, or pour a double, and only drink half.

You could also purchase and practice with the single basket... theyre pretty cheap. A lot of people will tell you not to use singles, but Id recommend getting a good single basket such as the Synesso or LM one and trying it out. It took me a while, but now I use the single nearly all the time with no problems at all.

    Gday griffster....

"ht" has a Breville Ikon mate so standard commercial baskets wont fit unfortunately. I think there are different types/designs of non-pressurised baskets that can be used in the Ikon though, both from Breville and others... :)

OK That is weird, I swear in an espresso guide I read when I was in my coffeesnob infancy, there was something saying that its better to pull a single from a double rather than use a single basket, since using a single basket requires you *to change your grind and everything, which can be a PITA for a single shot. I think it was part of a how-to on home-barista.

Ive also seen cafes dump the start of the shot and cut it earlier than usual - all other things equal this will give you a great shot too.
