    Synesso baskets vs VBM baskets

Ive noticed some people on here have replaced their standard VBM double baskets with Synesso double baskets. Would there be any noticeable difference in shot quality?

Re: Synesso baskets vs VBM baskets

I got my Synesso with a Pullman tamper I bought from Cuppacoffee. I had a Gaggia Baby at the time and it certainly was an improvemnt on that (holes more uniform, pour was more even). I cant see much difference at all between teh basket that came with my Levetta and the Synesso. In fact I had to have a very close look to work out which one was the Synesso.

If you already have a VBM I think the only reason you would get a Synesso is if it comes as a match with a tamper purchase or for some reason you need another basket

You can get the Synesso as a ridgeless basket, where as the ones that come with the VBM are ridged. ie the little slot that the portafilter spring fits into and holds the basket in place.

One of the theories being that it allows the puck to be knocked out cleaner, which I can say is true :)

It also causes the basket to knock out unless you get a thicker spring clip :p

And there is nothing more fun than fishing your basket out of a pile of old grinds...

I have never had any problems with coffee sticking to the ridge if you dose properly anyway. Always knocks straight out and then just a second rinse under the group to get the oils off and wipe with a tea towel.

I also agree with flynnaus, there is not much point getting one for the VBM unless it comes with your tamper perfectly matched. Even then I would go for the ridged otherwise the basket will keep falling out.

Sure you could order a thicker spring from CP but its still a PITA in my opinion. Then when you go back to ridged baskets and forget to change the spring clip, you need a crow bar to get the filter out, good luck not bending it...

Just my second crack, I have tried 6 different "double" baskets now ranging from 12g up to 21g, all different brands and I keep going back to the VBM stock double basket. (2nd best is the ridgeless double that came with my EM6910, but it always falls out.)

Re: Synesso baskets vs VBM baskets

We always recommend a new spring with the ridgeless baskets if the existing portafilters are designed for ridged baskets. Having used both ridged and ridgeless baskets, my votes definitely with the ridgeless. The process of forming the ridge often makes the basket slightly eccentric whereas the ridgeless ones (Synesso at least) are perfectly round. Ive found with any ridged basket that its impossible to not leave some coffee behind in the ridge, whereas the ridgeless ones the pucks almost fall out. Ridge shapes do vary so some will be worse than others in this respect, but if theres no ridge then it just doesnt happen. If you only use double baskets (as many do) then theres nothing to lose by making those ridgeless and paired with a stronger spring IMHO.

The other reason it is bandied around here is because a lot of people are buying the Pullman tamper which is cutom made. If you get the synesso basket that is an option when buying from Greg if/when you have a case of upgraditis on your machine you will still have a perfect fit tamper for your basket.

I dont know how much difference the Synesso basket makes, but the combo of a new Pullman Barista and a Synesso ridgeless has made an easily detectable improvement in my coffee.

I have never had a problem with the basket falling out when knocked, and I havent yet changed to the spring that came (extra) with the Synesso basket. I always tap the basket on the box, not the handle of the p/f on the box, and the pucks fall out without a trace.

    Cheers
