Nuova Simonelli Oscar- whats it worth, used at auction?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi everyone,

One of these is coming up for auction, just wondering what you thought a reasonable used price should be. Looks like it came from a small cafe. Any pointers on what to look out for?

Hoping to upgrade from my rubbish home machine.

    thanks.

Id be looking for a badly maintained machine, most likely in a sad condition if this came from any type of commercial enterprise.

Earlier models had no anti-vac valve so there may well be a boiler contaminated by off milk as well. As I understand, there is presently no appointed Aussie importer.

Be extremely cautious. Without a test, unless its an absolute bargain and youre prepared to risk blowing your dough, drop it like a hot spud.

Honestly I would put it out of your mind.

You have to know what youre doing to buy esp machines at auction.

Its not a reflection of the brand or model of machine, its the reality that machines ending up at auction (except through extreme good luck), have had their day.

    I beg to differ Attilio.
Sponsor Omaras get used machines in from businesses that have failed.
Admittedly Ive seen a few grinders where its obvious the owners didnt care enough to clean them at all and the machines no doubt would have suffered the same fate.
But not all used equipment has had its day.

The new ones dont have anti vac either. Parts are available from some of our sponsors and the machines really are quite simple from what I can gather so Im not sure there would be much that could be wrong. Pressure stats on some of the old machines were known to die but apart from that from all my reading the machines were pretty solid. If you got it for $500 you could allow that again as worst case I reckon to get it serviced/refurbished. One persons opinion that I read is that all you would need to do on a second hand oscar is replace the shower screen and portafilter o ring or what ever they call those things. At bare minimum I would take the machine in to one of the sponsors for a thorough clean.

Slightly off topic but regarding auctions...

We had about 400kg of raw coffee in the shop at the time of the fire. They sweltered at 700C for a few hours amongst highly toxic, corrosive soot.

The insurance company in their wisdom has sent them off to an auction house. :o

I hope there was full disclosure for an auction description.

Nuova Simonellis agency in Australia has recently been taken over by Espresso Mechanics (Technical Division of Cerebos Australia). They also carry all the spare parts, available from us if needed.

I agree. Its always a risk one takes buying any used machine from any unfamiliar source, not knowing the level of coffee the unit endured, how old it is, how proficient in operating it was the ex-owner and how frequently it was cleaned / serviced. You may end up only having to pay for a general service (inc replacement of head seal, & shower screen, circa $100) or you may end up as 2mcm suggested, *paying $$$ for cleaning of a contaminated boiler, which may end up with your buying price, more than a brand new Oscar.

While you taking about Oscars, I have a question about them. I was looking at one selling privately, when i did a pour, most the water from the shower head came through the middle section. Is that unusual, I have a gaggia and the flow is normally distributed over the shower head, and the same from videos of silvias etc.

From a basic point of view what would the symptom of a contaminated boiler be exactly ?

That auction was actually this morning. A bit disappointed as I missed out on the Oscar, bidding too slowly and it went for $550. (still cheap I thought?)

They also had a Lisa single group semi auto which went for $900.

Now where can I get a cheap second hand Oscar......?
