Diadema Jr Regal vs Giotto Premium Plus

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Im hearing and reading great things about the latest batch of Diadema machines, but how do they (for instance the Regal) stack up against the generally received gold standard of prosumer HX machines (the GPP)?

Apart from just being cheaper, I mean.

    Welcome..... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Thats only a temporary reprieve mate because of a current sale. I imagine they will head back up to normal retail prices after that ceases.

Both machines are excellent quality in pretty well all areas and in the end, your final choice will come down to personal preferences, more than anything else. Best thing you can do is try to visit a reputable specialist retailer such as our Site Sponsors, and arrange for some side by side hands-on demos and a close scrutiny. Ive put together a review of my initial experiences with the Diadema Junior Extra I bought a few months ago and can be found here.... http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1163234999/25#25

Lots of info to be found on the Giotto Premium Plus too but the best thing is to arrange for the hands-on demo. Nothing like getting a feel for both machines, and any others for that matter as there are some beauties in this price/quality range.... :)

    All the best,
    Mal.

The Junior Extra is probably the best one to compare to the Giotto Premium Plus. Youll probably be happy with any HX machine you buy, as long as you try it first.

A good HX machine comes down to great design of the most important part- the HX and there are some shockers out there...HX machines are not all created equal! Both the JE and the Giotto are good machines ;)

    Which ones are shockers?

Thanks for the comments fellas, but I still dont have an answer to my original question regarding specifically the Regal and the GPP. Im told the Regal has a number of advantages over the GPP, including a top fed filtration system, nicer taps, superior ball-joints, and more commercial-grade innards.

After reading posts by Luca, for example, I also wonder if the GPP isnt prone to the same kind of hype as Apple Computers, where looks and brand loyalty seem to reign over common sense.

Unfortunately, I am unable to to trial the machines in person, thats why Im asking here.

    Thanks

    Hi Cheese,

    Each has pros and cons.

The Giotto has a commercial pressurestat, more manouverable wands, is better to fill and has a slightly smaller footprint. The current build Giotto (released to the Australian market in the last few weeks) uses a shiny black powdercoated chassis- superior to the previous painted chassis and is very thermostable. It can also be identified as the front panel markings are acid etched into it rather than sprayed on. It has larger valves and therefore more steam pressure. The wand porting makes for the easiest microfoam production on the market I reckon. I believe that its the best Giotto Rocket have built- by a mile.

The Diadema looks different and one negative is that there is far less real estate on the top to hold cups. It has a stainless chassis but a smaller domestic rather than commercial pressurestat (not an issue IMHO). The tank is polycarbonate (I think *:-/) and youd want to be careful not to drop it. Shots as per the Giotto are fantastic but I believe the Giotto flows a little better in the 25-30ml zone. Like the Giotto, the DJE manages temperature well with little or no requirement for a cooling flush. The steam is gentler but long lived and the wand porting is the same as the Giotto- terrific. Id personally like just a few more degrees of angle in the steam wand for my milk texture technique- but again, no dealbreaker.

Both are terrific machines. Build quality is excellent in each. Choose the one you like the look of and regardless, you will be thrilled with your selection.

As with all these things in a forum you will get your answers in due time

I have seen the GPP in the flesh & its internal components but havent used one
    It looks well put together

Its a little smaller than my Bezzera Galatea and the Giottos curved sides are made in a similar way with welded side seams

Are you considering to purchase only these machines or will others be added on the short list

Youre on dangerous ground with Macs! As with Macs, theres a bit going for the Giotto. Just as theres no smoke without fire, theres usually a reason why people favour one product. Its usually because they do what they set out to do well and with flair

I tend to take the same approach as Luca - IMO the Giotto Premium wasnt a great machine - simple internals with a lower quality (eg. pressurestat) than some competitors, great steam tips, not worth the hype. Some of the people I know who didnt like the GP, much prefer the Plus version as this addressed many of the weaknesses.

regarding not having your question answered properly, you havent really given any info on why youre just asking about those two, and what your requirements are! machines are best matched to the user :)

chris seems to have answered it well though!
