    Around $1500 Machine

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hey there,

Looking to upgrade from a Gaggia Classic to a mean machine!

Comparing the Isomac Zaffiro, the Expobar Office and the Nuova Simonelli Oscar. Currently leaning towards the Isomac.

It will be pared with my Rocky Grinder.

I drink mostly Flat Whites, 2 a day, but need to pump out 6 + when having dinner guests.

At present I am leaning towards the Isomac, but am concerned after reading the coffeegeek review here:

    http://coffeegeek.com/proreviews/detailed/isomaczaffiro

This was written waaayy back in 2003, have all the reliability problems been fixed? He mentions in the article that it takes 2 minutes to go from shots to steam, but may be faster at 240v... is this the case?

What other machines are out there for around $1500...

And can anyone point out pros and cons with them?

    Cheers

First off I havent used any of these but for a start I wouldnt be buying a Zaffiro as it is still a Non HX machine for more $$ than a a couple of the entry level HX machines. You are paying top $$ for what is fairly much a blinged out Silvia. A much better buy on price and features will be the new Gee for a lot less $$.

Best thing is to go play with some of the machines at one of the sponsors and go through the differences or deficiencies of the machines in your price range.

    Good luck :)

Until my oscar died recently, I absolutely loved it. Great machine for making flat whites (my standard 2 daily as well), lots and lots of steam power.
Now that I am using the Diadema, it seems much more refined than the Oscar, but I had much much great use out of it, and it was a massive step up from the gaggia classic. I still aim to repair the oscar and then probably rehome it at dads place.

How long did you have it before it died?

I was definately leaning towards a Hx machine, but the review of the Zaffiro is glowing... so I am happy to consider both....

Life has and coffee machines have moved on a bit since then ;)

Time from shot to steam and back again will be no better now on 110V or 240V if it has the same sized boiler/group and element. Any more than one or 2 coffees will be a pain.

If you are only after 1 or 2 in a row then also consider a Lever machine. No waiting to fo from steam to shots (still not HX) but some other quirks depending on brand and type.

I got it second hand off another CSer who had had it for years, and then it was with me for 2 years. Considering over that 2 years, it was on ALL the time, i cant really complain too much. The one thing about the oscar is that you cant have it on a timer, because it has no vacuum breaker, and needs steam released. Easier to leave it on.

So now I have moved a little bit.....

Now looking at the Expobar Office and the Cuadra by La Nuova Era.

The Cuadra is a little bit over budget, but if it is worth the extra $$$ may be willing to stretch!

Anyone have experience or opinions on these two machines?

I got a Cuadra from Espresso Italia about a month ago. Top machine! My wife stopped complaining about the cost straight after I made her first Flat White. Got a Mignon grinder with it.
