VBM Domobar.........advice needed. VBM owners pls post

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi guys,
I am looking for a new machine, and really like the VBM Domobar Super, levetta.

I like the Giotto, but its all come down to the simpler cleaner lines of the VBM, and the 2x pressure guages (additional brew pressure guage) that the VBM has.

I have spoken to a retailer, and they have warned me that the VBMs were poorly put together, and had lots of leaks around the machine, and problems with other aspects of the machine.

I dont know whether the retailer was just trying to flog another brand of machine or was actually giving me good advice.

Any comments from the coffee loving fraternity/sorority out there?
Id love to get to the bottom of this before I part with close to $3K for a machine that might possible turn out to be a lemon!!

    Thanks in advance.

    Lovernotafighter.

Ive had my VBM for 2+ years without any problems at all :)

I have had a VBM for about 10 months and no issues. I think there were some forum posts a while back about some sharp edges and leaking from the drip tray, but these are easily solved. This is a solid machine that makes great coffee. Recommend you go and speak to one of the sponsors for an objective opinion.

Is this the same retailer that told you that the mazzer no longer comes with a push button?

The only way you can be sure you dont end up with a lemon is not to buy from this retailer.

If I can be of help give me a call - doesnt matter if you buy from us or not.

Two thumbs up on the VBM from me. The Piccolo and Domobar Super Lever at my old workplace got absolutely abused and never failed. I myself own the Domobar Super Lever and have had no regrets.

As previously mentioned, it sounds like that retailer is pushing another brand, or doesnt know anything about VBMs. That and there are countless reviews online that give very favorable opinions of the VBMs.

I am not sure of your location Lovernotafighter

    1) I would go to a reputable establishment such as a sponsor near you

    2) I would not limit myself to one make unless I tried all that is on offer
Choose a short list and get that special one machine that suits you or presses your buttons

Go test & drink some coffee from a few machines and you will soon know what you like or dislike

Remember Choosing a machine is personal

    Good Luck

I thought it sounded like he was full of it.

He told me that because of reliability issues he has stopped selling that machine....................boom, boom!

Yeah definitely something up there. If you read all the reviews for the VBM all over the web you notice several common themes, one of them is that its a superbly built machine with very high quality components.

That all rings true for mine, nearly 2 years on now and hasnt skipped a beat, and has been easy as to service myself.

I have only had my VBM Super Lever for less than a day 8-) *but in doing research they seemed to be known as a very reliable and robust machine.

Bought of Chris @ Talk Coffee and he advised out of the 100s of this model sold (one of his best sellers) has had only 1 unit returned for (minor) repair.

As for me, time will tell - we are only just starting out on our honeymoon *:-* ;D

Sounds like you are a discerning coffeesnob in the making there Lover... ;)

Why not take it to the next step and check out your short-list of machines from a couple of reputable specialist dealers such as our Site Sponsors, listed over on the L/H side of the page. A discerning coffeesnob needs to be served by a discerning and passionate vendor..... 8-)

What a joke! I use to own a Levetta and upgraded to the Super last year. They are both brilliant.

I bought both from Talk Coffee and Chris looked after me well. His ongoing support is fantastic. In fact all the site sponsors Ive dealt with have been brilliant regardless of whether I made a purchase or not.

My 2 cents worth for you.

    Happy brewing :-)

Maybe he/they did not provide follow up support or bother to explain that even teh best machine needs to be managed and looked after..

Water / Cleaning and Anti-Vac valves etc etc all need to be managed to some extent..

Good suppliers know this and spend the time to help and support... It may take a little effort but pays off in teh long run for all stakeholders...

Re: VBM Domobar.........advice needed. VBM owners pls post

    Thanks lads,

    Feedback is always greatly appreciated!

My apols as its actually 2 units. One dead pump solenoid and a massively abused wedding present which required a heart transplant!

As for the aforementioned vendor, I see a few possibilities:
[*]The alternate machine offered delivers a greater margin[*]He tells fibs[*]His experience is with very old VBM machinery imported by the C company.[*]ECA will not supply him for some reason and hes cranky.

The old VBM gear has little in in common with the current spec VBM as distributed by ECA and in fact I have seen a few of the old C ones for repairs.

They have been set up terribly, and are noisy, thermonuclear, cantankerous machines with little in common with current spec. machines other than basic external appearance.

This stuff was offloaded at bargain basement prices when the C company lost the distributorship. They are easily picked- smaller boilers, Jager domestic pressurestats and a number of other internal differences.

Fortunately, we have an importer that cares and makes sure that things are right for the Australian market and they return machines to the manufacturer if theyre not. This happened just last week with a batch of machines not built as they were ordered. The easy option would have been to unload them on to unsuspecting Aussie buyers, but that comes at massive expense to reputation when they fail.

It will be easy to determine if said vendor ever sold VBM machinery imported by ECA by calling them and naming the vendor. ECA will also have a record of his warranty claims.

I suspect a big mouth who is not to be trusted.

Its probably possible to make it behave but it will need a thermostability upgrade. Keep in mind that its nowhere near the spec. of current models and pay accordingly if you choose to. The boilers I saw in the older ones were more like 2L as well.

The bloke who purchased it should have got it at well under $2k if he purchased in the C fire sale....Allocate funds for an upgrade and scace calibration and the usual service items. People can and do get burned every day. Best if you can see it in the metal or get comprehensive pix.

That begs the question, how do the old VBM machines stack up against the new entry level machines e.g. Isomac Tea, Bezzera BZ07, Exobar Leva, etc?

Re: VBM Domobar.........advice needed. VBM owners pls post

Sorry but no one can tell you that unless they have experience of running those model Domobar Super machines being discussed here, AS WELL AS experience of running any of the others youve mentioned, and can therefore make an informed direct comparison. Most people here only have experience of their own (one) coffee machine.

That basically leaves the few traders that participate in the site (that may have the experience of the previous model Domobar Super), and I doubt they are going to get involved because it is a non issue. The old models are gone and will by now only turn up as used machines in who knows what condition.

If someone finds a used machine of whatever brand & model and it is in great condition and can be demonstrated to be working well, and if the price suits both vendor and buyer, then thats great. If its not in great condition or cant be demonstrated, or it can, but it doesnt work well, *then that isnt a reflection of what the model was meant to operate like if it were to be in new or great used condition. And if the machine was a dog but the price was felt to be a"a steal" by someone who thought they would be able to get it running well for a "convenient" cost, then thats great for them as well.

I think thats about all that can be said, other than to mention that they all work, some better than others, some have a better standard of build, and some are much easier to get into and service....and we are all individuals and have diff likes and dislikes, which is what makes the world go around.

Hi - I bought my Domobar Super a bit over 2 yrs ago from Chris (TalkCoffee); best money I think I ever spent. This was an upgrade from the Sylivia for me, and the machine is still as good as new in terms of its operation, and makes the sweetest coffee I had ever tasted once my skills came up to speed with it. This is definitely a purchase youll never regret.

    Hi,

Have had my DS for over a year now, the problems being referred to may have been as follows:

Poorly put together - there may be some sharp edges in a couple of spots on the machine, such as the top edge of the drip tray and the drip mesh cover. These are quite easy to file down, or simply be aware of to avoid cuts (I have direct experience of this - ouch)

Lots of leaks - hardly! The only leak Ive had is from the front handle of the drip tray when its overfull, and this is easily and totally fixable by simply tightening the bolts holding the handle in place.

Notwithstanding the above, the VBM is an excellent machine and Id buy it again in a heartbeat. Built like a tank and capable of handling anything you can dish up - very, very far from a lemon!

Now its all starting to make sense....

A read through a little posting history leads me to suspect that this thread is political and the intent was to promote a for sale item which has now been binned. >:(

how about we make a concerted effort just to say "sponsors are on the left, and they can help you when it comes to your purchase of a machine, and are/may be good places to try one out in your area. also, x,y and z may be relevant technical/cash factors in choosing your machine".

I got such a bashing for that post Ive given up on that stance. Di Bartoli gave me good service, and if everyone wants to harp on about their sponsor experience, I may as well do the same. If anything I thought it balanced out the sponsor reference incidences.

Perhaps a couple of other people who have bought this machine from other sponsors also want to post a recomendation ;D
