What coffee machine can you recommend?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi All,

I am looking to upgrade from our previous machine (Sunbeam Cafe Series EM6900 and grinder) . We thought the machine was okay until the steam wand stopped steaming!
95% of the time we have milk based coffees and that is why we went that machine. We could pour a shot while steaming milk. We were looking at the Silvia but it just takes to much time pouring shots and then having to froth milk afterwards.
What machines can anyone recommed? We would prefer not to spend more than $2000 and would be open to new or second hand as long as the history of the machine is good.
We generally make 2-4 coffees at a time a couple of times a day. And then when we have friends around my husband loves making everyone a coffee :)
The other question is would we have to upgrade our grinder which is the Sunbeam coffee grinder EMO480
Im an ex barista so know what to look for when making a coffee but just dont know what machines are out there that are good for home so any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Probably a dual boiler of HX then? New youd be looking at the Breville Dual Boiler, or Lelit dual boiler. You might find a second hand/ex demo Izzo Vivi or Vibiemme Dobomar Junior...

Are you close to any of the sponsors? There are quite a few in melbourne? Wish I was located in Melbourne... :(

    Welcome rredford1!

There ae number of machine possibilities available in your price bracket. What you are describing is a HX (heat exchanger) machine or a dual boiler machine. Either will allow you to pull a shot and texture your milk at the same time or immediately after- as you prefer.

The critical thing is to buy a good machine which works with you and the coffee rather than one you have to fight with.

At $2k, there are some great offers at or close to your brice point: Breville Dual boiler, Diadema Junior Semi-Auto, VBM Domobar Junior, Lelit PL60 or perhaps one of our demo/display Izzo Vivi machines. There are other good brands as well.

To choose from the range of good machines, its more about differences between them rather than will they make a good coffee. My job is to point out those differences to you and tell you what I dont like. No machine is perfect and once youre aware of the differences, you can then decide on your "best match"* - i.e. the machine which best meets your requirements. Internal design and build can make the difference between a good looking dog and a great machine, so do not buy on looks alone.

    Lastly, to the grinder....

In my opinion, your Sunbeam would massively limit the quality of your coffee. Id advise you allocate money for a Compak K3P or similar grinder.

The best thing is to see and sample these machines in the metal. I see youre in Melbourne. We have most that I have discussed on our demo bench and would be delighted to make a time to meet when you are ready to commence the process. Im confident that we can bring you in at or close to budget and that you will have the potential for coffee excellence at home.

    Happy shopping ;)

    Chris

Haha, Hi Chris. Good to see were on the same page. :) I forgot the Diadema though... Kinda sad considering I own a diadema (not that model though). :)

Thanks David8 and Chris. I will look into those suggestions.
Chris are you located on Arturton Rd in Northcote? If thats the case we are just around the corner! What days and times are you available so I can see what time would suit for my husband and myself to come without the littiles :)
What is a Compak kp3 worth?
    Thanks

I went to Chris place in Northcote today; great setup, very professional and a huge range!

He makes a fair cuppa, too.

Thanks for showing me the range, Chris. Much appreciated!

If I may, it might be worthwhile to at least look at a PV Lusso as well. Lever coffee is divine and its a joy to use a lever machine. I have a used Cremina and would recommend one of those except for the fact you entertain and the Cremina wouldnt be able to make a string of coffees for guests. Its a 1-2 person machine. The Lusso however has two group heads and a much bigger boiler which would give you the flexibility you need. With these pumpless machines you can extract and steam instantaneously.

A lot of people say there is a learning curve with lever machines but if there is I didnt notice. I pulled a perfect shot off mine 2nd time around. They are easy to clean, near silent and have few parts to replace. Make really, really delicious coffee with complex flavour profiles. But its all up to you.
