    E61 showerscreen maintenance

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I was wondering what the experience of E61 machine owners has been like for cleaning their showerscreens.

Given that the group gasket needs to be removed to be able to get the showerscreen off, is it something that E61 owners can do regularly, without damaging the seal?

    Hi Greg,

I carefully use a flat blade screwdriver wedged between the group and the side of the shower screen.

More often than not, the full shebang comes down in one piece with no damage....If the shower screen/gasket have been there for a long time, youll have to replace them....

    Hope that helps...

    Hi Krusty-

I guess a "long" time will depend on how well the machine is maintained....

As an example, I had a Diadema in for "repair" a few weeks ago.

Rather than listen to advice given on installation into the owners office, the machine was completely neglected...It was saddest machine I have seen for a while...Steel wool was used to clean the never wiped steam wand, the water tank was filthy with algal growth and dirt and the water softener cartridge was green/brown and expanded due to the build up of gunk in it.

Needless to say, the machine had NEVER been backflushed and the shower screen and basket were putrid and not cleanable.... >:(

Somewhat ironically, the owner wanted to know if his repairs were covered under warranty *::)....He learned a $200 lesson- warranty does not include cleaning services...

So, in a clean machine like yours, 12 months may be considered young ;)

    Thanks Chris.

I was wondering about this given the recent newsletter article by Alan Frew where he talked about machines being returned for repair simply because they were not cleaned + my own experience cleaning my friends HX machine. The showerscreen is one area that should be cleaned fairly often and could easily be neglected if it was difficult.

I can understand that. My experence with shower screens came on a very cheap machine (it wasnt too bad, actually). After a few months it made all the right noises, but no water came through.

The shower screen was clogged, blocked right through. It had no three-way valve, incidently.

A good scrub and everything was back to working order.

I have had my shower screen and gasket out for cleaning often enough in the Splendor, prise it out with a screwdriver as mentioned. Clean and replace by placing the gasket back on the screen (unless it has gone really hard and needs replacing in which case put a new one on the screen, push up into its recess and to secure it firmly add the portafilter locking it in place. Easier than the screw option on the 91s really. Little to no chance of damaging the gasket unless you are so ham fisted that you should take the machine into the shop for a full clean.

Probably time to change the shower screen and the group seal Krusty....

Surprising that it wnet so quickly....Perhaps you just got a brittle one...

I have some ECM ones which will fit, but Im sure Pedro can assist as well...

    Re: E61 showerscreen maintenance

I did this myself last night to give the Expobar a good clean and of course the seal got slightly damaged. But coffeeparts came up with the goods and a new seal and screen were sourced from them with ease. The only reason the seal was damaged was that the original has a slight ridge half way on the seal as an outside seal but the new one doesnt have that anyway so hopefully next time I take the screen down it wont be a problem at all.
Wasnt too much gunk behind the screen but enough to show that it needs to be done a little more regularly. I would encourage others to do it themselves as well, as long as they can apply care and patience.

    Brett
