ECM Giotto - Repeated Clicking Sound - no coffee

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi,

Hope someone can help with this.

When I turn the machine on there is a repeated *clicking of a relay in the brain box.

If I stick a multimeter across the element, it appears that the element is being switched off and on.

I thought it might be some kind of over current detection but if I disconnect the element, pump and value solenoid the clicking continues. The element was replaced a couple of months ago.

If I disconnect the temperature sensor the clicking rate is different.

If I disconnect the water out sensor the clicking stops - as does every thing else.

Where would I get a replacement brain box?

    HI folks,

I got the machine repaired with a replacement controller but it has gone again after 18 months. The element has also failed. At this rate this is a very unreliable machine.

Does any one know were I can get replacement parts at a reasonable price?

    Cheers

    Hi David

I hear your frustration and am somewhat surprised at the repeated failure.

ECA continue to be the best people to speak with.

Out of curiosity, may I ask how many hours per day the machine is on?

Re: ECM Giotto - Repeated Clicking Sound - no coffee

    Hi David,

Element failures in the Giotto are very rare. I think I have replaced only 2 or 3 in my time working with many hundreds of them.

We are finding that the new Proelind boards in the GPP are far more robust and ECA has released a new wiring specification for all Giottos- which essentially wires all older machines as per the current GPP.

Heavy use of the machine can lead to board and/or element failure. Be mindful that these machines are not urns and should not be used as urns. We often see failures after parties where the machine has been heavily used for tea making.

I would also not advise that any machine in this class be left switched on 24/7. They are not commercial machines and long duty cycles can influence element relay life.

My advice would be to ask your service tech to raise your case with ECA and see what they say. Also, regardless of board replacement, check that your techie has rewired the machine to current spec.

    Hope that helps.

    Chris

    No worries db,

It sounds to me like you will need a new board and that the element will need to be replaced as well. If you are not seeing circa 45ohm with the machine switched off an unplugged, it has failed too.

The new wiring schedule is far more robust and will eliminate any issues you have experienced. That stated, Id still suggest a time switch and a a kettle if required ;)

I was thrilled to find this article via google. Sad to see it matches the problem with my Giotto this morning. :(

Happy ending with new control board installed thanks to Bob Frizzel.
