    Excited - Awaiting VBM!

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi everyone,

Im excited and humbled to be able to actually post to this forum instead of just reading and wishing..

Just placed an order with Renzo of DiBartoli for a new VBM Domobar Super in Black, together with a Macap M4D and Espro tamper.
I feel a bit frivolous to be blowing so much dosh in such a short space of time but its great gear and will make a slightly better replacement for an old sunbeam EM5800 thermoblock machine that died some months ago and a dodgy Russell Hobbs smasher grinder :P Gotta love those unexpected cash windfalls!

Should be ready for pickup Tuesday afternoon and then I will no doubt have a serious learning curve ahead of me! Tried steaming milk in the shop and this machine has some serious grunt, its almost over before it begins..

Thank you Renzo and Ofra for your patience and helpfulness, top notch service!

    Sounds like a great setup.
I think if you can afford it all at the same time then that is definitely the way to go.

I recall Renzo saying that the steam and hot water knobs had been revised very recently to be bigger (the demo machine in the shop still had the smaller knobs I was expecting). This could be a good thing, with more surface to grab on to.

Shame the VBM doesnt seem to have cool-touch wands available for it though, I would have liked those. How hard can it be to design and produce some arms for it?

Maybe you can add a cool touch anyway.

I put one on my Expobar.

I was really only after a different steam tip but to get the one I wanted I need a different thread.
The cool touch was an added bonus.

I have a VBM Levetta, and after burning myself a couple of times re-positioning the steam wand, I slit a 3 inch length of silicon food tubing, wrapped it around the arm just above the bend, and super-glued it closed.
Its been there for months now and provides a soft, cool grip on the wand.

There sadly seems never to be an end to upgraditis....I have tweaked Veneziano, M4D and a K10WBC as well as a host of other paraphernalia....Id love a G3, Synesso or a Speedster though ::)

    Me TOOOOOOO.....

But sadly the build quality of the these will mean it will be many, many years before they appear on the secondhand market at an "affordable" price :(

Until then my 20 year old La Cimbali will do the job just fine.

Yeah for $6.7k :o . Tis cheaper then the US one tho. That is very unusual. I can only guess this is because we use the standard 240v and the market for such a machine isnt that large in the states.

"is it in stock?" will be the last question I ever ask, if I get a cash windfall.

re. the VBM Domobar Super, mine is pretty tricked out, but I understand Renzo and Ofra are having an ongoing dialogue with VBM over the ability to go cool-touch. I keep burning myself through the grip.

FYI, the taps are bigger but I hated the triangular small ones so much that I got a set of Giotto taps for it........priceless!

I am a lucky bugger, although I felt like a right gumby demoing it in the shop - not at all used to this class of machine.

Will have to hold off all the people saying "well have to come over for a nice cup of coffee then" until I can drive it with at least a bit of skill. Practice will be fun though...

    Very sexy photos.....

I just bought mine as well and Im walking up the walls until I get it, in the Northern Territory you have to be patient for everything. Dont have the gorgeous grinder though, could only splurge so far, the rocky i bought a while ago will have to do for the moment. I bought the rocky when i thought that a Silvia would be the answer to my prayers, then I found this site. I totally got that one wrong.

    Good luck Mark....

    Re: Excited - Awaiting VBM!

Itll be well worth the wait!

Had a major breakthrough just now which has really improved my shot quality! Was experimenting with my grind fineness and grinding time/dosage for the mysore nuggets beans Id roasted last weekend.

Had an awful time, everything was going pear shaped, shot time fell dramatically as I made the grind finer and increased the grind time to maintain a consistent dose. Couldnt work it out??

Then in desperation I read the Macap manual and discovered that you had to turn the grinder collar *anti* clockwise to make it finer, not clockwise!

    DOH! ::)

Needless to say, much better now! ;D

haha, yeah I learnt that during the barista comp at Aroma earlier this year after wondering why my prac shots were gushing after "fining" up the grind.

Congratulations on your VBM, welcome to the club!
Sorry to hear your tray edges were sharp & got ya, as you say should bge an easy fix.
Its interesting to see that mod they made re the front panel flanged out.

One bit of advice - make sure when youre not using it that you bend the steam wand and particularly the hot water pipe in so they are over the drip tray. I hadnt closed off the hot water tap enough (following the manuals instructions and not tightening it), and the ensuing drips when the machine came on the next morning missed the tray and gave me a decent puddle by the time I got up.

Ok so I dropped into CP to get some bits for me Cimbali and I went upstairs and had a look at the GS3. Dont. Im sizing everything up in my apartment to see how much money I can get for it to fund the GS3. *::)

Its a lot smaller (and more appealing) than I thought. I require one. :D

Thats a great line Dan. If you were to sell all that gear you already have, you might come close to filling your requirement! ;)

I finally made it upstairs too and Pedro was very generous with his time (as usual).
