    Mocha Java Decaf?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hey all,

A friend of mine has been told to back off on the caffine for a while.
He has asked me to get him some decaf. Is the Mocha Java a good example of a decaf. And are there any roasting tips?

    Thanks.

    Nick

    Re: Mocha Java Decaf?

    Hi there
Not only is it a good example but its more like superb.
I too am running caffeine free at the moment and when the Mocha Java is unavailable i use another decaf (green beans) from a local roaster, while this is a nice coffee when roasted to the start of 2nd crack, the Mocha Java is sooo much smoother.

I would recommend it to anyone.

I roast it for my wife and friends. Its great. Loads of chocolate, just pull it at or just before the first snaps of SC.

Hi, a quick question from one of my pregnant friends: is this one true Swiss Water(R) decafeinnated?

My memory thinks it is from reading something on CS ages ago.

Yes it is a Swiss Water decaf.

When we first offered this it was a CoffeeSnobs exclusive and as far as I know it still is. Great decaf, easily the best according to my wife who worked her way through dozens of different decafs while pregnant and then feeding our 3rd.

We have tried a few different decaf samples since but nothing comes close.

Thanks Andy. Ill order some for her with my next BrownBay order.

I forgot to order this week!! >:( Had to do some quick roasting tonight to get me through, and ended up at a function smelling like... well, you know. That delightful aromatic mix of hot soggy weetbix and bushfire.

    Hi guys,
Ive just got to say -Mocha Java is AWESOME!. Do me a favour Andy, keep this bean on the menu as long as Java exists! Just yesterday, I absolutely blew away a Chinese tea loving friend of mine with a single mocha java as an iced coffee...she said it was better than Gloria Jeans (well, i suppose thats her reference point *for coffee!)
I told her I just roasted it in the breadmaker outside and under the heat gun, and she nearly died...
Anyway, apart from the intensity of listening for the FC and SC with decaf beans, the taste is so rewarding and it seems to be great straight after roasting.
Ive just ordered another few kg.s!

I wonder if someone with a gene cafe can advise me about roasting decaf mocha java? I roasted 200 gms at 230 C for 16 minutes. It tastes a bit metallic, so I wonder if I could roast it in a more suitable way.

    Hi Hobertbuz

For my Gene I have settled on this:
Set to 235C, FC will occur at about 13 mins. Its easy to hear.
At first sign of FC turn the temp down to 228C.
SC will occur at about 15 mins. The SC is very hard to hear and as the beans are already quit dark its hard to tell when to stop if you miss hearing SC. I have found that 16 mins is a bit much. These beans can get away from you very quick and rapidy get quite black :-)

(PS. You can also set the temp to 250C at the start and then reduce setpoint to 235 if they get to that temp before FC. Otherwise when they get to FC turn setpoint down to 228 as above)

    Re: Mocha Java Decaf?

Had not tried Decaf before buying some of this for my wife. I probably roasted it a little long and will try a bit shorter next time but I found it certainly lacks the body and intensity of the real stuff and hence didnt cut through milk that well - nice flavour though, easy drinking something for those late nights....
