    How to use robusta?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Guys, I noticed some indian robusta popped up on beanbay.

Does anyone know how to use it?

I doubt youll be taking it straight as a SO.

Im thinking maybe blend it with a body bean like an Indian Tiger Mountain or something.

From what ive done with robusta (the indian one) it seems to work well with beefy beans, not so much lighter beans

Tried it straight but it wasnt for me as a straight shot or long black

Theres another discussion on the Robusta which seems to point at around up to 15 - 20% in a blend seems to work

Seems that a lot of the people on here seem to buy a bag and split it

100% straight robusta or blended with other robustas is not for the feint hearted but its worth trying it to know the full flavor of a robusta.
To date i try ALL coffees i get straight so i know what it might be able to add to a blend.

I use it in blends up to 15% but thats just me :)

Like phrostyboi said... use it with beans that are not so delicate as it can overpower the nicer flavours of some coffees very easily.

    Re: How to use robusta?

Firstly lets remind ourselves that just as there is poorer and better quality Arabica beans, there is some good quality Robusta as found on Beanbay, and a lot of poor quality Robusta, usually found in instant coffee.

Then, Robusta generally seems to benefit from closer to 2 weeks rest time after roasting before you try using it.....this may be why some dont like it as SO if they didnt wait long enough?

Apart from that I found one of the Indian Robusta bean types I got from Bean Bay some time ago was really nice as a SO (after 2 weeks rest), smooth nutty taste from what I remember, and I could drink it like that any time if I wasnt caffeine conscious.
However my intent was to generally use it as a blend around 20% and found it made a nice improvement to give a more full bodied flavour, for lattes, with of course some small increase in caffeine level.
The 20% was partly due to having to use it up before it went off, based on the batch sizes I was roasting, and I liked the taste.

Any tips for roast profile on the bean bay robusta? Im cooking some now but Im treating it like an Aribica coffee - if anything I might pull the roast a bit sooner than usual to retain some sweetness..

    Hi Pat,

You will find it needs more heat and 2nd crack will yield a darker bean. I roast it a touch further into 2nd and it can be used to blend up to about 10%.

My theory is it takes longer to peak, so I roast 1 week out from the other components if I am using Robusta.

    Hope that helps.

Maybe its just me, but Ive been enjoying some of Andys finest robusta beans as a SO...

Totally agree with the two-weeks plus rest.

    Re: How to use robusta?

    hm... thanks guys

I pulled my roast at CS 8 at first signs of second crack but still smoking!

Ill have to do my next a bit darker to compare and contrast - I guess my thinking was that a darker roast increases caffeine concentration?

Or did I just make that up?

My understanding is the darker you go the less caffeine..

But it is all relative ;)
