Talk Coffee - Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Special Prep.

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Well..... :o

Today I have enjoyed by far the best Yirgacheffe coffee, that I have ever experienced. Superb coffee Chris.... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

It was so good that I had three espressos and then a Long Black in the space of about half-an-hour ::) :D.... So much fruitiness, it is almost impossible to describe all the flavours dancing around on my palate.

Initially, its the sweetness that grabs your attention but then theres this explosion of fruit coupled with a very pleasant acidity - strawberries & cream, gooseberries, grape and a reminder of a good Pinot Noir that lingers for several minutes. Body is awesome and the finish is pure Belgian Chocolate.

This is an absolutely awesome coffee and I highly recommend that other CSers give it a try, if possible.

Id love to have some more now but its gonna be tough enough as it is, to get to sleep tonight. Very happy CSer... 8-)

    Hi Mal,

Do you like drink milk based coffee?

Have you been able to try your roast in a latte for instance?

Ive got a small quantity of this too and was planning to roast up a batch this weekend.

And any tips on how you went about roasting it on your behmor (i assume you used a behmor)?

This coffee was supplied by Chris from Talk Coffee with my new machine, already roasted. Im not sure if it is the same as the green offering on BeanBay recently... :-?

Yirgacheffe is normally an easy bean to roast on a home-roaster because they are usually so well processed, clean and well graded. Although I havent roasted any Yirg in the Behmor yet, I would stick pretty well to my usual 350g batch size roasted at 1lb, P3, D. This has served me well for some similarly graded Bugisu a little while ago so would be a decent enough starting point.

Given that there can be some variation in a range of parameters and conditions, not the least of which is the nominal value and stability of your line voltage, you will probably have to suck it and see initially, maybe with smaller batches and go forward from there.

Let us know how you get on.... ;)

    Hi guys,

Firstly, thank you so much for your kind words Mal. Your feedback is hugely appreciated and I am humbled by it.

This Yirg was from last years batch and I currently have the last of it in the roaster. Andys brilliant roastmonitor software will allow me to place a line over a line, so I expect this final batch will be just as good.

Now to grab a bag for myself!

    Cheers

    Chris

Great to see the positive comments on this bean from such respected CSers. As luck would have it I have just received 5kg I ordered from beanbay prior to reading this thread.

I will be paying extra special attention when roasting this one. :)

me too MzBz I collected Yirg from Fiefys on Tuesday. I dont expect to get anything like Chriss roast as a newbie using popper. Also think they are different vintage beans ?? All part of the learning process, compare & contrast. I intend to give samples of Chriss roast to friends hoping to lead them towards better/best coffee drinking.* How I love CS**::)

    I had a laugh... ::)

As much as I consider myself to be a reasonable enough home roaster, I dont think I would be able to replicate what Chris has done with this bean.

Theres a lot to be said for the use of a commercial roasting unit, by someone who knows how to use it. In this case Id have to say that Chris has absolutely nailed this one.... 8-)

Mine (Yirgacheffe from Chris) has shipped yay

I agree Mal, going to roast right now - currently with my handheld in the cool breeze non-modded popper (way too quick i guess).

Wondering which way to go for roasterupgradeitis - Behmor V Baby roaster/Lebanese/Turkish Barrel/Drum Roaster on gas flame?

Up at my sisters tomorrow for wood oven pizza - may try a sacrificial roast

Re: Talk Coffee - Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Special Prep.

So I roasted some of Andys bean the other night. It got to first crack faster than the Flores Project beans.

The Yirgacheffe seems to be sweeter than the Flores althought I thought it would taste crap due to its apperance and scent after the roast (beans were smaller and the chaffe didnt come off cleanly in the roaster).

The Yirg doesnt have that strong/bitter taste of coffee and is quite smooth when had as a latte. I also tried it as an espresso and loved it; the first nip was slightly sour (slightly over-extracted and roasted these three days ago) but was followed with a strong body to it.

I roasted more on Saturday (found a secret- read forgotten stash) and even yesterday out of the Aeropress, it was an amazing bean. We have enough for a couple more batches and will keep it in the shop while we can :)

It certainly is a bit like that... ;D

Thats why I had three espressos in relatively quick succession followed up with a Long Black so as to savour the wonderful flavours and aromas for little longer :D.

A beautiful bean, beautifully roasted by Chris.... 8-)
