    CoffeeSnobs FairCrack – 1st project, 2nd Village

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight

This is the second part of the [link=http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1222013354]first FairCrack project[/link]
(started a new thread so the two villages are not confused.)

In the previous thread we exictedly announced the first project of purchasing 2 pulpers for small holder farmers to manage and share. This is the second one.

Bente has found the perfect site for the second pulpery, a run-down and mostly disused coffee factory in Msuni, Tanzania.

There is an existing farmers group that has been using the handpulper but no one is using the fermentation tanks and the rest of the infrastructure that is there.

Bente said: "The pictures will show you that everything is a bit rotten.... But most of it is dirt.... Uhh that place need some serious cleaning ;-))) it was stinking like hell"
    :)

The factory has a big area for drying. The disused fermentation tanks will get cleaned and returned to working condition. To get water to the tanks they only need 60 meters of pipe laid and the site even has drying racks (3 that are ok and 3 that need repair)

Like an archaeological dig, the water channels and everything needed are there under the dirt which means that they can get this place operational pretty easily.

The store "needs a little touchup too".

Bente tells me she had heard stories about disused coffee factories but this is the first time she has found one.

The second pulpery renovation will take off very soon!

Great stuff. Hope we can see the after photos as well.

This is way up there with the best aspects of being a CS. I would be happy to see a small amount of FC funds allocated to a small gift of appreciation to Bente for her contributions in making this happen (buy a few beers for yerself too Andy!!)

    Nice one [smiley=thumbsup.gif].

Whats needed now is a CS winter escape tour package in a year or twos time. Spend a few days picking and processing. I dont mind a good excuse for a trip overseas 8-)

    This is just super cool.
Great to see something happen that can actually make a difference for peoples lives.
Hopefully it becomes a signifiant difference, for the better.

Well its my birthday today so this news just made it an even better day :)

Andy, i just tried to get some info up on the 2 villages, basically was just trying to get an idea how close the villages were together and get a better idea of where all this is happening.

Do you have any links to maps you can share with us ?

    congrats once again

    Darren

    thanks Steve :)

well i tried to find some maps but no luck, maybe some GPS co-ordinates ?
just an idea but if we could set up info or a profile on the villages we are helping that would be pretty cool ? it may actually spur more donations or interest maybe ?
    things like

    location
    population
    etc
    etc

stuff that will give us a bit more of an insight to their way of living

I think the villages are too small to figure on any maps. The best you might achieve to get some idea is to go to Google Maps, look up Moshi Tanzania and switch to Satellite view. You can zoom in a little and look at the terrain north of Moshi and what might be coffee plantations. BTW keep travelling nortrh and check out Kilimanjaro - great!

If you go to this site you will see the Tanzania Coffee Curing Co of Uru Nth Msuni and some pics of coffee processing (for the benefit of yourists) From around Photo 94. Not sure how related these photos are to the villages that are receiving the Faircrack pulpers. Theres also some info you can getr by googling Msuni coffee tanzania

    (Happy Birthday Banjo!)

Yeah it is a great project and Im still excited that we have all made this happen.

Bente is a saint and I dont want CoffeeSnobs to every become a burden on her time (remember she works at least full-time in her own small business already). To date I have asked for no photos (she has sent these off her own bat) and dont want to query progress... I know she will pass on items of interest as they happen so Ill continue to respect her space.

Where are the villages? Flynnaus is about spot-on with where I think they are. North of Moshi, South of Kilimanjaro.

Whats needed now is a CS winter escape tour package in a year or twos time.
That might happen one day. It would be cool if a group of CSrs could spend a week working for the locals just to get our hands dirty. I cannot help looking at the above pictures and wanting to "muck-in".

    ;)

Gives new meaning to an "adventure" holiday - my hand is up! Most of us sit back and appreciate the end product but it would be great to experience and appreciate first hand the work that goes into harvesting and processing coffee in these communities...and what a great way to learn more about crop to cup!

    :) ::)

Im a little late piling on the "well done"s -- and since Im such a newbie, its not like Ive contributed anything yet to the FairCrack fund, but Im very glad to be in a position to start doing so.

Hooray for Andy and the rest of you considerate snobs!

    (from Bente)

In Msuni they have started building a small Intake for the water pipe and on Monday the real works are starting.

As usual in Africa everything takes time and a lot of patience, and follow up.

I learnt how to deal with that by now.... But it took me a looooooong time. Will take pictures when there is some change to be seen

By the way the eco tourismn project someone mentioned on you website is indeed in "our" Msuni.

    Welcome to CoffeeSnobs vernissage.

Yes the logistics can be "fun", Bente and Ralph have to deal with plenty of African moments of supplies going missing, and things not going to plan but they do a great job of managing it.

As for updates... yes, plenty of stuff to post... ergo my request for a better way to post the info:
