  • At home training in Sydney??

    Hi All,

My lovely wife bought me a present of a new machine and a grinder.

I apologise if this has already been covered elsewhere. I did a search but could not find anything specific on this topic.

What I would really like is to get trained properly from the start. I found a place in Queensland that will come and train you at home starting from $45 including coffee required for the session (http://www.mycoffeecoach.com.au/mycc_domestic_training.htm).

I live in Sydney and would really like to do a course like this. Can anyone recommend a good trainer that could come to my house to train me on my gear and how much is it in Sydney? (Oscar & Grinta)

Ill second that. The training they run instore is fantastic, so I can only imagine if they came to your home the quality of the training would be just the same.

I would recommend you consider attending a course at their store though. While I understand the attraction of having the training in your own home, coffee people are, on the whole, friendly, enthusiastic and always great for a chat. Speaking for myself, I found attending the small group training at Di Bartoli a great way to meet people with the same passion as well as learning lots about making espresso! The basic course is run by Hazel De Los Reyes who is a fantastic trainer that I cant speak of highly enough.

If anyone had the chance to spend some time being trained by Hazel and decided not to take that, the delivery-van men should be sent to their home to collect their coffee equipment straight away. Beyond a chance to tour some of Australia, if I could afford it I would fly in to take the class!

A number of years ago, when I was still just an amateur some sort of barista, a friend in the business came by, spotted a fault or two in my procedure, and immediately improved my espresso in just minutes.

Fantastic. I will talk to mentioned people/companies. I will post a follow up as to how it went for anyone interested. Good point Hazchem in that a group lesson may be a good way to meet others that enjoy coffee as well. Thank you all.

For those interested in training at home I thought I would post a follow up. I ended up going with Jet Black. Charlie came to my house and was very helpful and actually made it a fun learning experience. Whilst it ended up being a couple hundred with the accessories I ended up buying I found it was money well spent and I am far happier with the quality of coffee I can make since doing the training. Would thoroughly recommend Charlie and Jet Black.
