  • Completely spaced out by a double shot.

    As I have mentioned before I bought an new espresso machine last weekend. Of course I need experimenting and playing around with the new machine to get things right.
    I am not using freshly roasted beans at this point in time, I am using Harris Coffee dark whatever. This I had to wait for my little son to get ready so I thought I try a double shot. The first one was under extracted tasted a little bit metallic/sour. The second one seem to be quite right, the pressure gauge on the EM6910 was on 1 oclock, the coffee had about 5 to 6 mm crema and tasted quite pleasant.
    The most amazing thing happened after I drank the coffee, I got a short head rush and I felt completely spaced out for more than two hours.
    Is that normal?

    Relatively normal I think. My coffee consumption was fairly low at the time I joined CS (well still is really) but the first time I had 2 espressos in quick succession, I got the caffeine rush you experienced.

    I am guessing those with moderate to heavy use, or have a different metabolism, would not necessarily experience it.

      Theres only been one or two occasions where Ive come away from a double espresso a bit jittery. I think it may have been because I drank it on an empty stomach so the caffeine went into my system faster than usual. Normally my espresso followed by flat white at lunch time leaves me with a pleasant coffee buzz for a few hours, but I cant say Ive experienced the head rush or spaced out feeling youve described. Otherwise coffee doesnt really effect me at all. Ill be having dinner with friends and when I order a double espresso to go with my dessert theyre like "I wouldnt sleep a wink tonight if I had one of those!". I, on the other hand, go home and promptly drop off to sleep.

        I think I have to reduce the dose a little bit.

          I usaually have a coffee at night and a glass of red and I can sleep quite well too. I reckon I have to work on the dose.

            hmmm, a few reasons spring to mind Mike.

            1) As a relatively new CoffeeSnob, your body has adjusted to instinctively reject stale Harris floor sweepings - hence the dizzy feeling of poisoning yourself with mediocre beans;

            2) You dont drink enough [quality] coffee, so your tolerance to caffeine is low ... like all shop bought beans, theyre probably full of low-grade [but high caffeine content] robusta, and that would explain the rush to the head matey;

            3) Low sugar levels? Get a test.

            Solution? (coffee-wise)

            Ditch the Harris ... go for fresh quality beans, grind them yourself on demand with a quality grinder with micro settings, and watch/taste the results out of your 6910.

            Practise, practise, practise grasshopper! ;D

            Cheers,
            Tony

                  Onya for seeing the light Mike!

                  Andys Wow will s*** on the Harris youre currently subjecting your 6910 to.

                  BTW, if you wanna delve into the world of home-roasting, purchase Andys starter pack as a start ... and get yourself a HG & BM + cooling mechanism.

                    At this point in time I am quite happy just to make my coffee.

                      No probs mate - cant go wrong with Andys Wow.

                      Think about the green-bean smorgasboard that Andy offers monthly as an option though.

                      And use the search function, and scan the cupping room, for pre-lim info on how to roast the beasties to optimal taste.

                        Andys "Brown Bean" smorgasbord is pretty darn amazing too and by the time you work your way through all the varieties offered there your palate will be well and truly primed and ready for home roasting....

                          From what I can gather by talking with other coffee addicts, everyone has a slightly different reaction to the product dependent upon a variety of factors which includes: body mass, age, general health, when last ate, and the level of regular coffee intake(tolerance). People also manifest different reactions - I dont get a big buzz but I DO get an unpleasant lethargy often accompanied by cold sweats about two or three hours after a big hit. Wierd huh? I tend to think that coffee is like wine in that the nastier the brew the worse the after effects.

                            Last week when my percolator was on the fritz, I put an entire pot of coffees worth of coffee grounds into my plunger and made coffee before realising that my plunger only makes one cup. Imagine my surprise as I drank the thick mud that came out of it! Even after watering it down like youd do with a long black, I was all nerves the rest of the night and couldnt get to sleep.

                              Spaced out, no, jerky jitters after three double-shot ristrettos within an hour, yes.

                              Another vote for Andys Espresso Wow - just marvellous. I order it regularly and use it as a comparison for my taste testing of other single origins I roast from Green BeanBay. It wont just stop at browns... like many CSers I became curious about home roasting... :
