  • Coffee industry websites

I am wanting to do some reading up on the coffee industry in general and would be appreciative if I could get some of your favourite links to user friendly, accessible and informative websites.

The sort of information I am looking for is on industry size, participants, markets, consumption habits and importantly growing and production practices.

    Thanks muchly.

    No problem "system2002",

So long as there is no conflict with the "CoffeeSnobs Site Sales and Posting Policy".... Namely, this one... http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1115338528

sooo.....any moderators would like to comment on whether this would interfere with site sales policy?

Simply looking for information to digest, not product oriented / promoting websites at all.

            Re: Coffee industry websites

The coffee industry is huge and features a massive number of sub-markets, so youre going to have to get specific in your research.

The International Coffee Organisations web page is a good start: www.ico.org and you might also be interested in www.coffeeresearch.org. Oliver Broster from Bero Coffee in Japan/Singapore delivered a very interesting presentation at this years Golden Bean conference - if you email him, Im sure hed forward you a copy of the slides. The presentation drew on information from Neumann Kaffee Gruppes statistical unit, which has a little info on its web page (http://www.nkgstat.com/home).

From there, you will need to get more specific. Most producing countries have peak bodies that have web pages of various levels of usefulness and most consuming countries have a specialty coffee association.

For growing and processing, start off by reading Emily Oaks From Crop to Cup (http://www.cremamagazine.com.au/from-crop-to-cup/) and then move on to George Howells The Long Road to Quality Coffee (http://www.terroircoffee.com/content/view/260/). Howells article is, IMHO, some of the most concise and authoritative writing on coffee that you will ever find ... and its free! Howell adds to the article and updates it every now and then; I gather that he has decided that he is probably always going to be too busy to write a book, so this project is the next best thing.

If you are interested in specific origins, pick up the first issue of BeanScene when it is released in the next few months and my syndicated column + new web site might be of interest to you. (Its a WIP at the moment.)

            Cheers,

            Luca
