  • Business idea - critique and comments sought

Hey all, I am after some feedback on a business idea I have been mulling over for a while now.

Basically I am considering opening a B&B/cafe with the point of difference being that all food served on site (vegetables and meat) was grown on site. I am thinking it should be within a 2 hour drive of a capital city (probably Melbourne) with anything that isnt grown onsite coming from local producers.

Esentially trying to promote a more sustainable way of looking at food.

    Thoughts?

    Its been done...

Ive been to a B & B in the upper Hunter that was growing their own vegetables and beef. Great spot, not sure if its still there though...(no thanks to mining that is :)

And Im sure that there are others already doing it as well.

So, yes, Im sure you could get it to work.

Biggest challenge might be growing your own coffee!

I think its a great idea I would however look at using locally sourced meat as there are already people growing meat for local restaruants.
I suggest you have a look around Daylesford, Woodend area here in Vic. Also south gippsland has some great local produce

The Lakehouse in Daylesford is already big on using local produce and you couldnt find a better model, too model your business on.
Growing your own veg can be rewarding but doing it for a B&B in Victoria, you would want to pray for rain.(raining as I speek)

A romantic concept, however you cannot expect to compete with someone whos core business is food production, not on cost nor on quality/consistency.

Running a B&B/cafe that highlights local produce would be more feasible in my opinion.

I saw an episode recently of "The Hotel Inspector".
The guide book the little B&B wanted to get into insisted that all food be locally sourced.
So it has been done before and for them was one of their points of difference to other establishments.

I think this is a good point (feasability).
Depending on the size of the place you might not even be able to keep enough chooks to produce the eggs youd need for breakfast.

I recently popped into Flemington Markets to check out the fruit and veg prices and while there bought some eggs.
Whilst they werent the cheapest eggs on site the quality was much better than the usual ones I get at the supermarket (and I dont buy the cheap ones there either).
They were supposed to be straight from the farm to the markets and judging by the quality they were.

You could grow a few herbs for the kitchen, theyre overpriced at the shops and taste better than out of the fridge.

You could also grow some other easy to manage vegies and use them in "special" dishes when in season.
All your regular items should be supplied from a reliable local source.

FWIW, I would be a tad wary of trying to establish a business which relies heavily on discretionary spending in these times when many belts have to be tightened somewhat..

Always keep in mind that its a whole heap easier to lose it than make it

                Good luck ...

Indeed this is an issue at the moment, with people seriously reducing expenditure or revising what they do spend their money on....

If you believe a lot of the pundits (who are allegedly qualified)..... it is going to get a lot worse before things improve..... and they are talking the next 18 months

So yep, Id be wary of any new venture..... especially one which attracts a premium over another identical offering (by virtue of some special attribute)..... you might well find many will go for the cheaper offering..... or simply not spend on it at all.....

Id be waiting a while before starting something new..... and yes, it is a great idea.... just really bad timing IMHO.

According to history, high quality goods/services rarely respond to depressions or recessions.

At the same time I wouldnt want to be at the mercy of the weather for the quality food that was an essential of my business plan.

Id go with TGs suggestions, it matches my exposure to the wine and hospitality industries.
